Key words flip charts writing sentences Flip charts is one of instructional media which is used to facilitate the students writing skills. By using instructional media the materials in writing can be understood easily learning activities become more interesting and various activities can be used by the teachers. Instructional media are also very beneficial in English Language Teaching. Thus the researcher is interested in investigating the use of flip charts in writing sentences of English at SDN 1 Mimbaan. This study is intended to investigate how the flip chart improve students ability of class V-A of SDN 1 Mimbaan in writing sentences. The preliminary study showed that 85% out of 33 students scored below the minimum mastery learning standard (Standar Ketuntasan Minimal/SKM). The study was designed as a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of this study was thirty three students of class V-A of SDN 1 Mimbaan. The study was conducted in two cycles each of which consisted of four steps namely planning implementation observation and reflection. In the planning stage the researcher preparing the lesson plan the research instrument and prepared criteria of success. In the implementation stage the researcher conducted what had been designed in the lesson plans. In the observation stage the researcher collected data concerning flip charts implementation. In the reflection stage the researcher decided whether or not flip chart met the criteria of success. There were four lesson plans two in each cycle. The instrument used to collect data were interview guide for the teacher questionnaire writing test observation checklist and field notes. The criterion of success of the students is 60% students must score above the SKM with the gain equal to or above 10. The result of this study showed that flip charts upgraded the students scores in writing sentences hence their writing 75 7 % students of class V-A scored above the minimum mastery learning (Standar Ketuntasan Minimal/SKM) with the gain equal to above 10. It can be concluded then that the study fulfilled the criteria of success. The finding also showed that flip charts also activates the students as well as the teacher thus make the class run more effectively. Based on the findings the implementation of flip charts improved the students writing performance from cycle to cycle. The improvement of the students quality in writing sentences from the preliminary study to the Cycle 1 was not significantly high. In other side the improvement of students quality in writing sentences from Cycle 1 to Cycle 2 was significantly high because of two reasons the change of topic and their better understanding in writing the sentences. In other words there were 28 students out of 33 students (85%) who were below SKM in preliminary study 20 students out of 33 students (60%) who achieved the score below SKM in Cycle 1 and 8 students out of 33 students (24 2%) who achieved the score below SKM in Cycle 2. Indeed the implementation of Flip Charts in writing sentences not only improved the students writing performance but also brought students positive attitude in teaching and learning process.
