ABSTRACT Suprapto Joko. 2009. Teaching Theorema Pythagoras by Using Inquiry Strategy to Improve Students Problem Solving Skills of Grade VIII in MTs Diponegoro Tumpang. Unpublished Thesis. Keywords teaching of theorema Phytagoras inquiry strategy problem solving skill. This study is based on the condition of teaching process in MTs Diponegoro Tumpang. The instructional process is not in line with teachers expectation in which students are not active in learning and don t do the task given by teachers. Based on the writer s observation the instructional process in the school is still teacher-centered meaning that teacher dominates instructional activities in classroom. The task of teacher are explaining material writing material giving example and exercise and students task are paying attention on teachers explanation jotting down material and doing exercise. Thus the instructional process is not innovative causing boredom and reluctance on the part of the students. To handle the above-mentioned problems the writer conducted participatory research using qualitative approach. This study is conducted in MTs Diponegoro Tumpang. the aims of this study is to produce instructional steps for teaching of Teorema Pytagoras using inquiry strategy which can improve students problem skills of Grade VIII. Teaching teorema Phytagoras using inquiry strategy is an instructional model using the following steps orientation formulating problems making hypothesis collecting data testing hypothesis and drawing conclusion. 1) orientation aims at motivating students by presenting the instructional purpose that will be achieved and steps to achieve them 2) formulating problems in this step students formulate problem by considering the question given by teacher. 3) making hypothesis Students make temporary answer for the given question 4) collecting data Students manipulate instructional media so that they can determine the length and width of each structure 5) testing hypothesis students test the collected data 6) drawing conclusion Students draw conclusion concerning the concept of teorema phytagoras. After students are skillful in using inquiry strategy students conduct most of learning activities feel happy in learning and their ability in solving problem. It can be observed from the increasing score in cycle I and II. Percentage of learning mastery classically in cycle I is 30 77% and in cycle II is 88 46%. The improvement of students ability in solving problems is also supported by the result of students work in the form of students worksheet and observation sheet of students activity. It can be observed that students work are more focused from students worksheet I up to IV. The result of observation for students activity from four observer shows that cycle I is 69 64% and cycle II is 76 78%. It means that students are more active to learn in teaching process in cycle II than those of cycle I. From the questionnaire of students response for the teaching of teorema phytagoras with inquiry strategy the writer obtain the average score of 3 35% for 30 question items. It shows that students response to teorema Phytagoras teaching with inquiry strategy is very positive. Based on the finding of this study the writer proposes the following suggestion for mathematics teacher (1) using inquiry strategy as one kind of instructional strategy that deserve to be considered (2) developing this study to include other class or level using wider scale of material to make the finding more complete and deep. (3) helping students in learning through the use of instructional media or concrete object to be manipulated.
