Abstract

The material of the circumference and width of a circle plays an important role in mathematics as well as in a daily life. The mastery on such material is therefore strongly needed. However many students including those of SMPN 1 Tanggul Jember still face some difficulties in understanding the material. One of the causal factors is the use of conventional learning method. In the conventional method a teacher doesn t give any chances to the students to inquire the formula of the circumference and width of a circle by themselves. The formula is immadiately given so that the students tend to memorize it per se. Besides they have no opportunity to apply the formula in their daily life. Based on the above fact it is undoubtedly necessary to implement the accelerated learning method in mathematic teaching. Learning the material of the circumference and width of a circle through accelerated method enables the students to study academically by employing their body and thought to interact with others and outside world. In turn this process can stimulate the students to learn quickly effectively and enjoyably. This research which was conducted in SMPN 1 Tanggul Jember is aimed at gathering a comprehensive empirical description on (1) the pattern of mathematics learning through accelerated method which can ease the students of class VIII of SMPN 1 Tanggul Jember in understanding the material of the circumference and width of a circle and (2) the response of the students of class VIII of SMPN 1 Tanggul Jember to the implementation of such learning method. This study used qualitative approach and took the form of class action research. The interviewees were four students which included one of high two of middle and the other one of low intelligence. The subjects of the interview were selected based on the test result and the mathematics teacher s suggestion. Learning through accelerated method to ease the students in understanding the material of the circumference and width of a circle was carried out via for stages i.e. (1) Preparation step. The accelerated learning method used in this step was Motivating your mind and Acquiring the information. The teacher created a positive learning environment by adding flowers attaching posters turning on classical music and forming groups. Then the teacher explained about the benefit or function of the material in a daily life reviewed the prerequisite material and distributed the student working papers and audiovisual instrument. (2) Delivery step. The students worked in a group to inquire the formula of the circumference and width of a circle with the help of the working paper and audiovisual instrument. This process fitted the Searching out the meaning principle. (3) Exercising step. The accelerated method applied in this phase was Triggering the memory. The students were trained to apply the formula they had found in answering the practical questions provided in the working paper. (4) Showing the result. The activity covered group presentation and response upon the outcome of the learning process. This step conformed to the principle of Exhibiting what you know. Then the teacher and the students reflected and evaluated together the students investigation and learning process. Last but not the least the researcher gave a final test. The step being performed was Reflecting how you ve learned. The above four steps were carried out in two action cycles. Action I covered the material of the circumfererence of a circle and action II did of the width. The result of this research indicated that either the process or the outcome of the learning for circumference and width of a circle material was already good. This conclusive case was proven with the students performance which was active enthusiastic and cooperative while they were manipulating the concrete things to inquire the formula of the circumference and width of a circle. During the teaching and learning process each group could use the instrument well and do the task given in the working paper correctly. The result of the final test showed that the students had understood the material well. Based on the result of the action I test 87 88% students in the class got a score of more or equal to 65 while in the action II test 88 23% students reached more or equal to 65. Furthermore the four students being interviewed could explain the answer of the final test correctly. Althouh they made an error in their written test they were finally aware of their mistake and able to explain the correct answer in the interview session. The students response upon the accelerated method used in learning the material of the circumference and width of a circle was very positive. The students asserted that they enjoyed the learning because it enabled them to work in a group and share the idea with their friends. They also stated that they could learn happily and enjoyably because the use of the audiovisual instrument was very helpful for them in understanding the material.
