Abstract

Key words vocabulary mastery and pictorial word puzzles. This research was intended to improve the vocabulary mastery of the eighth graders of MTs Surya Buana Malang in reading recount texts. Based on the preliminary study 19 (65.52%) out of 29 students of grade eighth of MTs Surya Buana Malang got score below the SKBM set up by the school for English vocabulary. Furthermore it also showed that the students difficulties lay upon the problem of memorizing new vocabulary. To overcome the problem pictorial word puzzles were applied in vocabulary learning. This research was classroom action research. The subjects were class VIII A in the first semester of 2009/2010 academic year. Class VIII A consisted of 29 students with 13 females and 16 males. This research was conducted in two cycles. Every cycle consisted of four stages planning the action implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. In the planning step the researcher planned and made some preparation for this action. Then she conducted a vocabulary pre-test to measure the students vocabulary mastery. Next step the researcher observed the situation of the implementation of pictorial word puzzles in the classroom. Based on the observation the researcher made a reflection about what happened in the classroom in cycle I. After that she re-planned the activities that were going to do in cycle II. The criterion of success was 75% of the students get the minimum passing grade of 75. The instruments used to collect the data were observation sheets questionnaire and vocabulary quizzes. The data gained from the observation sheets were teaching learning process and students attitude towards the implementation of pictorial word puzzles. Students responses on the use of pictorial word puzzles were gained from questionnaire. It took two cycles to meet criteria of success. In cycle I the implementation of the action was not fully successful it was proven by 19 (65.52%) out of 29 students got score above minimum passing grade of 75. Since the criteria of success told that 75% of students had to reach the minimum passing grade of 75 Cycle II was conducted. The implementation of the action was fully successful in cycle II. The students score was better and had met the criteria of success. In cycle II after the students play pictorial word puzzles 25 (86.21%) out of 29 students got score above minimum passing grade of 75. To sum up the students scores had suppressed the criteria of success determined by the school. The increasing number of students got score above minimum passing grade showed that pictorial word puzzles was very helpful for improving students vocabulary mastery at the eighth graders of MTs Surya Buana Malang. The research findings showed that the implementation of pictorial word puzzles makes the class more active and alive. The use of pictorial word puzzles during vocabulary learning improves the vocabulary mastery of the eight grades of MTs Surya Buana Malang. The pictorial word puzzles make the vocabulary ii learning more enjoyable and interesting because students can memories the meaning of the difficult words without asking their teacher or looking them up in the dictionary all the time. The result of observation sheets and questionnaire showed that students were interested in this media because it was enjoyable the class atmosphere became relaxed and created cooperation between partners with challenging task. The research findings show that the using of pictorial word puzzles during vocabulary learning could be implemented to improve the vocabulary mastery of the eighth grades of MTs Surya Buana Malang. It is suggested to the English teachers to apply pictorial word puzzles to improve their students vocabulary mastery. For other researchers it is suggested that the similar research can be conducted using different methodology in other schools or vocational schools with different genre of text.
