Abstract

Key terms capitalism exploitation labor false consciousness. Capitalism generates different classes in society the passive owner (bourgeoisie) and the proletariats. The proletariats are forced to work for living and sell her/his labor power to capitalist while the capitalists enjoy the profit from the labors product. Exploitation happens when the labors get less equivalent compensation than the actual amount of work done. It is almost impossible for the proletariats to refuse their conditions since their consciousnesses are constructed by the capitalist that they will survive if only they work. Tim Burton s movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) depicts the phenomenon of exploited proletariat from the relation of the Wonka s factory worker Oompa-Loompas and the capitalist Willy Wonka. The foci of this study are to analyze how the movie represents capitalist exploitation on the workers and how the exploitation happens. The story is interpreted using Marxist approach. Previous studies had been conducted to discuss the movie from various approaches. Unfortunately critics are rarely talking about Oompa-Loompas. The topic of labor exploitation is actually important to discuss further in this analysis for this issue is connected to the world today s labor exploitation problem. This study has proven that Wonka the capitalist had exploited his workers Oompa-Loompas. This matter could be shown from Oompa-Loompas wages which are unequal to the amount of work they have done. Oompa-Loompas also lost their freedom to interact with outer world since Wonka owned them exclusively and put them in a giant prison Wonka s chocolate factory. Single actor which performed the whole Oompa-Loompas shows capitalist depiction of labor. The whole Oompa-Loompas were identical this feature fits to typical capitalist who ignores individual variation. Oompa-Loompas acted only as production machine. Their working motivations were only economic compulsion to survive and to keep the capitalist system work. Oompa-Loompa always looked happy working in the factory though they were exploited. This happiness was a pseudo condition since the false consciousness had made Oompa-Loompas not realize their condition as exploited workers. Wonka had shaped Oompa-Loompas thoughts ideas and frameworks and developed a system in such a way as to generate false consciousness and ideology Oompa-Loompa would not survive without Wonka s help and to work in Wonka s factory was their fate therefore they had to sincerely accept their condition in the factory Oompa-Loompas were kept in ignorance of what was wrong with them. This condition created a status quo which made the workers think their condition was normal while in reality they were actually exploited by capitalist.
