Abstract

Key words Teaching Speaking SMA Islam Malang This study was conducted to describe the teaching speaking to the first grade students of SMA Islam Malang in terms of (1) the schedule of teaching speaking English (2) the methods used in teaching speaking English (3) the media used in teaching speaking English (4) the students practice in speaking English and (5) the students ability to speak English. This study employed a descriptive study because it was designed to describe the teaching of speaking at SMA Islam Malang to construct certain information about the real phenomena faced by the school. The data were obtained through four research instruments observations questionnaires interview guide and field notes and they were presented descriptively after being classified into related aspects. The findings showed that the implementation of teaching speaking English in this school did not have any specific schedule. The school used two different English teachers with the consideration that one teacher taught reading and writing skills while the other taught listening and speaking skills. This differentiation was not effective because when the topic of reading and writing skills were too much then listening especially speaking would be taught as the non-required activity. In the teaching and learning process the teacher used various activities and media in the classroom but the most activity used was role play while the most media used was realia. Besides learning English at school there were several activities outside the class that students could do such as joining a group discussion or a private course to enhance their ability to speak English. Thus there were few of students who joined such kind of courses. Joining a group discussion or a private course might affect the students ability to speak. They were more confident in sharing and expressing their ideas. Moreover when it came to the students who did not join a course they tended to keep silent and always refused to answer the teacher s question. Finally it is suggested that the teacher should use creative and various activities and media in the teaching and learning English to make the students more confident in expressing their ideas. Then the suggestion is also delivered to the students that they need a lot of practice speaking English into their daily activities with their friends. Other suggestion is delivered to the school that SMA Islam Malang should provide many facilities of teaching media. The school should reevaluate the English teacher s competence by conducting a test in order to develop the student s competence. Last this research hopefully beneficial to the further researchers that will give more information about teaching speaking English at school.
