Abstract

Keyword humor ambiguity twisting linguistic ambiguity Humor is now considered as part of human life. When we hear about humor we would relate it with something funny that can make us smile or laugh. Medgyes (2002 3) says laughter may be accompanied by a whole range of physiological signs quickening heart rate and breathing slightly higher blood pressure perspiration and faster brain activity. It can be said that humor pervades into our social life. Humor itself consists of three basic types they are visual physical and verbal. The verbal humor involves the use of words which can be found in such things as puns jokes satire and witticisms. Sometimes humorists twist the linguistic ambiguity in verbal humor both can be done in oral and written verbal humor. Thus this study aims at investigating twisting linguistic ambiguity in written verbal humors that occur in Indonesian humor-book Edwin Jhody Ketawa Bukan Berarti Gila. There are two research problems presented in this study to identify and describe the features that allows twisting linguistic ambiguity and also structural levels where the twisting of linguistic ambiguity occurs. The research design of this study is descriptive-qualitative and the source data are taken from the jokes in the Indonesian humor-book Edwin Jhody Ketawa Bukan Berarti Gila. The researcher selected the jokes in which linguistic ambiguity is taken as the funny stimulus. And then she classified and analyzed the data in term of the features that allows ambiguity and into the levels of twisting linguistic ambiguity. The findings show that there are 11 factors that create twisting linguistic ambiguity in the humor-book Edwin Jhody Ketawa Bukan Berarti Gila. They are (1) Similar Pronunciation (2) Manipulation of Juncture (3) Manipulation of the Elements of Word Structure (4) Different Meanings of a Word (5) Different Meanings of a Phrase (6) Different Meanings of a Sentence (7) Different Meanings of a Sentence in Improper Translation (8) Different Meanings of a Phrase in a Sentence (9) Different Referents of Pronoun (10) Referents and the last one is (11) Speaker Intended Meaning. While in the second problem the researcher found that the level of twisting linguistic ambiguity in this humor-book is dominated by Twisting Pragmatic Ambiguity then it is followed by Twisting Syntactical Ambiguity Twisting Phonological Ambiguity Twisting Lexical Ambiguity and the last is Twisting Morphological Ambiguity. This study might be beneficial for the next researchers particularly Linguistics students in analyzing the phenomenon of verbal humor. Hopefully the next researcher would be more detail in conducting research of twisting linguistic ambiguity.
