Abstract

Key words picture series students writing ability narratives. This study was performed to answer the research problem How can picture series improve the ability of the 8th graders of MTs. Surya Buana Malang in writing narrative texts This study was aimed at developing strategy in using picture series to help students produce better narrative writing since the result of preliminary study showed that only 9 students out of 30 students (30%) who could reach score (3) within the range score 1-4 . The picture series consisted of four to five pictures arranged chronologically. They were selected on the basis of clarity size color and neatness so that the students could catch the story easily. This study was collaborative action research which consisted of two cycles each of which consisted of two meetings. Every cycle of this study consisted of three stages pre-activity main activity and post-activity. The subject of the study was the students of VIIIB MTs. Surya Buana Malang in the academic year of 2009/2010. The research instruments used in this study are observation checklist field notes questionnaire and scoring rubric for the students writings. The data obtained from the observation checklist and the research questionnaire were presented in tables while the data gained from the field notes and the students writings were analyzed and reported descriptively to picture out the condition of the class during the instructional process to record the interactions between the teacher and the students as well as between students and students and to see the students improvement on the result of their writings of narratives. The findings showed that the picture series as instructional media made the teacher and the students find that it was attractive effective easy to understand and the most important is that it helped students to generate their ideas easily to narrate a story and achieve better performance in writing narratives than before. This medium effectively improved the students ability in writing narrative texts. All students had reached the criteria of success 30 students (100%) reached score (3) within the range of 1-4. Moreover the majority of the students gave positive response towards the implementation of picture series in the case that 20 students out of 30 students (66.7%) showed their excitement of picture series. Furthermore 26 students out of 30 students (86.7%) found that picture series helped them develop their ideas in writing narrative texts. Henceforth it is suggested that English teachers use picture series as an alternative media to teach writing. It is suggested that English Departments introduce picture series to English Department students who take TEFL and PPL classes as the consideration of using media to help students problems in class especially writing in the future practice of teaching. It is also suggested that further researchers apply picture series in different skills and text types in their similar studies. i
