Abstract

ABSTRACT Purnama Cynthia Lutfi Cahya. The Use of Code Switching in the Teaching of English in X-7 at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Kepanjen. Sarjana s Thesis English Departement State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Setyadi Setyapranata M.Pd. Key words code switching the teaching of English Pioneering International Standard School (RSBI) This research aims to investigate code switching used by the teachers in the teaching of English in X-7 at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Kepanjen. SMA Negeri 1 Kepanjen is a public senior high school located in Kepanjen Malang District which has become a Pioneering International Standard School (RSBI). There are two problems in this research namely the types of code-switching used by the research subjects in the teaching of English in X-7 at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Kepanjen and the reasons for the use of code switching by the research subjects. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the subjects are two English teachers. The data of the study are the form of written recorded utterances when the teachers are teaching in the classroom. The duration of data collection started from February 4th 2010 until March 2nd 2010 which consisted of six meetings three meetings for each teacher (February 16th 2010 was excluded since the researcher could not do the observation). The observation was done every Tuesday and Thursday. The result shows that there are five types of code switching found in the teaching of English in X-7 at SMA RSBI Negeri 1 Kepanjen used by the two teachers. They are inter-sentential code switching (50%) intra-sentential code switching (43 75%) which involves a word within sentence (27.5%) a noun phrase (10%) intra-lexical code switching (3.75%) both a verb phrase and an independent clause (1.25 %) emblematic code switching (3.75%) establishing continuity with the previous speaker (1.25%) and changing of pronunciation features (1.25%). Besides there are nine probable reasons for the use of code switching by the two English teachers namely the notion that a speaker may not be able to express in one language (23.75%) translating words (23.75%) intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (18.75%) repetition used for clarification (12.5%) talking about a particular topic (6.25%) making jokes (6.25%) quoting somebody else (3.75%) interjection or inserting sentence fillers or sentence connector (2.5%) and expressing group identity (2.5%). In addition the researcher takes one general reason namely considering efficiency of time. This study suggests not only the students of linguistics study programme but also the students of education study programme to think more critically about code switching and other phenomena in other contexts. Besides it is expected for the future researchers to conduct their observation in more various contexts so that they can enrich much more information about code switching and some other phenomena.
