State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Fachrurrazy M.Ed. Ph.D. Keywords Cambridge curriculum RSBI class According to Sindiknas Bab XIV Pasal 50 Ayat 3 Undang-Undang No. 20 Tahun 2003 the local government has to develop at least one international standard school in each district. Based on this rule the local government in Malang developed some international standard schools. Therefore many schools in Indonesia especially in Malang are eager to develop international standard schools. Unfortunately the schools seem to develop international standard schools without considering the prerequisites which are needed to develop good international standard schools. International standard schools in Malang adapt Cambridge curriculum integrated with school based curriculum. SMA Negeri 1 Malang implements Cambridge curriculum in its international standard classes. SMA Negeri 1 Malang has been an RSBI school since 2008. Before becoming an RSBI school a school must be an SSN (Sekolah Standar Nasional). After completing the SSN standards then a school can be an RSBI. After five years the school can be an SBI. Despite implementing Cambridge curriculum in its RSBI classes the students of RSBI classes at SMA Negeri 1 Malang have experienced the Cambridge International Examination. Due to the fact that SMA Negeri 1 Malang declares itself adapting Cambridge curriculum in its international standard classes the writer is eager to observe the teaching of English in the RSBI classes at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. This study was conducted to describe the teaching of English in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. It aims (1) to describe the RSBI syllabus which is used in SMA Negeri 1 Malang (2) to observe the teaching techniques which are used in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang (3) to describe the kind of instructional materials and media which are used in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang and (4) to observe the assessment which is administered in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design because it describes the teaching of English in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. The setting of the study was SMA Negeri 1 Malang and the subjects were the eleventh grade classes of XI IA 5 XI IA 6 and XI IS 2. The instruments used to obtain the data were observation sheet field notes interview guide and questionnaires. Syllabus and curriculum mapping were included to complete the data obtained. Observation was applied in order to know the teaching of English in the RSBI class and the activities done in the classes. The result of researcher s observation would be also supported by the teachers curriculum mapping and the school syllabus. Interviews were conducted to know the teachers responses towards the teaching of English in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. For the students questionnaires were provided for the sake of obtaining the students opinions. ii The result showed that the teaching of English in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang in terms of the syllabus the teaching techniques the instructional materials and the assessment administered were not applied as it has to be since there were still many considerations to take. The teacher still used the same syllabus teaching techniques instructional materials and assessment system in teaching English in the RSBI and regular classes. The adaptation of Cambridge curriculum through the school based curriculum had only been applied theoretically. In fact the teacher considered the materials from Cambridge were too difficult for the students. Based on the findings the English teacher is suggested to integrate materials from Cambridge curriculum (authentic materials) and school based curriculum in balance. The teacher is also expected to encourage the students to more actively study whether it is inside or outside the classroom. The teacher should prepare the syllabus the teaching techniques the instructional materials and the assessment system more appropriately before teaching students in the RSBI class at SMA Negeri 1 Malang. Besides the practical suggestions for further study were given. The future researchers are expected to improve and to use Cambridge curriculum more appropriately in terms of the curriculum content the teaching techniques applied the materials and also the form of assessment. There also should be such qualifications for the teachers who teach English in the RSBI class to differ from the teachers who teach in regular classes. This research seems to prove that teaching of English in the RSBI class has not been implemented according to the design which has been made by the school itself. In other words the institutions which decide to use Cambridge curriculum should and must indeed prepare themselves in order not to be called haphazard.
