Key Words flow chart narrative text improve comprehension This study is intended to describe how the use of flow chart can help the tenth graders to improve their ability in comprehending narrative texts. The researcher was interested in doing the study because the teaching technique applied by the teacher was not effective to make the students comprehend reading text in an easy way. Besides it was due to the way of teaching that is still monotonous. Accordingly the students scores in reading were below the minimum mastery learning standard (Standar Ketuntasan Belajar Minimal/SKBM). The researcher then was eager to improve the students comprehension of narrative texts by introduced such media. The subject of this study were the students of class X-7 of SMAN 1 Malang. The study was desinged as a Classroom Action Research (SAC) followig Kemmis and McTaggart s model. The study was conducted in two cycles each of which consisted four steps namely planning implementation observation and reflection. In the planning stage the researcher designed the lesson plan the research instruments and prepared the criteria of success. In the implementation stage the researcher conducted what had been designing in the lesson plan. In the observation stage the researcher recorded and collected data of the flow chart implementation. Last in the reflection stage the researcher decided whether or not the technique applied was successful to solve the students problem in reading comprehension. The instruments to collect the data were the field notes the evaluation sheets of the lesson plans the teacher and the students performance the questionnaire and the students response sheet. There were also an instrument in the form of quiz and summary test for evaluating the students mastery. The result of this study showed that flow chart improved the students ability in comprehending reading texts especially narratives. Most of the students scores in quiz in each cycle after the implementation of the technique were also in which 75 percent of the students acores were above the SKBM. Flow chart activates the students as well as the teacher thus make the class run more effectively. Flow chart makes it easier for the students to comprehend reading texts narrative in particular. There are several suggestions that ought to be considered by the English teachers. First it is important for teachers to vary their teaching technique in order to avoid the students boredom. Second recommended for the teachers to include flow chart as one of the teaching techniques applied in the class.
