There areseveral media used in teaching and learning grammar one of them is flip charts.Flip charts refer to colorful pictures that can be used to illustrate grammar in theforms of picture and words. This study is aimed to examine whether there is a significance differenceon the ability to identify grammatical structures (preposition and adjective phrase)of the sixth graders of SDN Rek-Kerrek II Palengaan Pamekasan between thosewho were taught by using flip charts and those who were taught without using flipcharts. This study was a quasi experimental design with the procedures includingthe pre-experimental stage the experimental stage and the post experimentalstage. The instrument used to get the data was the grammatical structures testsconsisting of 20 items for preposition test and 20 items for adjective test. They arein the form of multiple choice types with four options. Each of the test items wereconsidered valid from the view of test content and the representation of thematerials tested since the test used content validity. The reliability was found to be0.808. Meaning that the reliability of the test was very high. This study was conducted to the sixth grade of SDN Rek-Kerrek IIKecamatan Palengaan Kabupaten Pamekasan in academic year 2009-2010. Thesubjects were two classes of the sixth grade. One class was used as theexperimental group and the other one was used as the control group. Theexperimental group consisted of 33 students and the control group consisted of 32students. So the total number was 65 students. The finding shows that the experimental group got better mean score thanthe control group. For preposition test the mean score of the posttest for theexperimental group was 81.36 and for the control group was 55.46. Meanwhile for adjective test the mean score of the posttest for the experimental group was82.57 and for the control group was 63.90. Based on ANCOVA analysis with thehelp of the SPSS 14.0 program and pretest as covariates it was found that theobserved value (Fov ) is 75.760 for Preposition Test and F ov 58.070 forAdjective Test. Both Fov is higher than F cv at 0.05 level of significance. Itindicates that there is a significant difference on the ability of students to identifygrammatical structures between those taught using flip charts and those taughtwithout using flip charts. In conclusion the finding of the research shows that the flip charts areeffective to be used in teaching and learning grammatical structures. Thus thewriter suggests that flip charts be used in the teaching and learning grammaticalstructures in elementary schools.
