Abstract

Based on a preliminary study in MTs Negeri 1 Bangsal Mojokerto it was identified that VIII-A students found it hard to understand texts especially narrative texts. As a result they had difficulty to answer questions following the texts. Besides they did not participate actively in classroom activities. To solve the problems Adapted Numbered Heads Together was proposed to be applied in teaching reading because some researchers have proven that the technique was effective to help students to both comprehend materials and participate in classroom activities. The objective of this study was to describe how the implementation of Adapted Numbered Heads Together can improve the students reading comprehension and participation. This study used collaborative classroom action research. The collaborative English teacher acted as the observer when the researcher implemented the adapted technique. The research was conducted in one cycle which consisted of three meetings and covered planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects were 44 students of VIII-A in MTs Negeri 1 Bangsal Mojokerto in 2009/2010 academic year. The instruments used to collect the data were interview guides questionnaires observation sheets field notes and a reading quiz. The result of the research showed that Adapted Numbered Heads Together improved the students reading comprehension and participation. The number of students getting score equal or above 66 in Cycle 1 increased 67.36% from preliminary study. In addition the students participation improved from preliminary study of Cycle 1. The students participation in paying attention to the explanation improved 34.09% from the preliminary study to the first meeting of Cycle 1 and 45.45% from the preliminary study to the second meeting of Cycle 1. The students participation in answering the researcher s questions improved 40.91% from the preliminary study to the first meeting of Cycle 1 and 50 % from the preliminary study to the second meeting of Cycle 1. The students participation in discussing and presenting the group s work improved 100% from the preliminary study to both the first meeting and the second meeting of Cycle 1. Finally the students participation in asking the researcher questions improved 52.27% from the preliminary study to the first meeting of Cycle 1 and 56.82% from the preliminary study to the second meeting of Cycle 1. The researcher implemented Adapted Numbered Heads Together in this study. First the lesson is explained briefly. Second students were grouped and each member was given a different number. Then each group was given the same set of questions. Each group member was responsible to answer question(s) whose number was the same as their number. Next all members tried to answer the questions they were responsible for. After that they were assigned to discuss their answers with their teammates in order to find the most accurate answer. When the group discussion was over a number was called. All members in every group whose numbers were the same as the called number raised their hands. One of the students was asked to present and to answer the question. The other students who had the same number as the presented students were encouraged to give response towards the presented student s answer. Finally the answers were concluded. Based on the result of this study it is recommended that English teachers implement Adapted Numbered Heads Together if their classes face similar problems. For the other researchers they are recommended to use Adapted Numbered Heads Together on different grades levels of education and subjects with better scoring grid which only assesses reading comprehension and accommodates an answer having more than one option.
