Abstract

One important goal of feminist scholarship is describing of how gender is defined through cultural practices and in this thesis how women are being positioned in a society through Femina magazine. This study focuses on how Femina s ideology of the modern Indonesian women is considered to enlighten women understanding about personal identity and social values. Femina operates as an ideological institution attempts to shape their readers women in this case lives in particular ways. Thereby women would willingly come into their position as the subordinate status in the society. At this point the concept of modernity redefines individuals within the society which is when individual is no longer defined as what they inherited but as the product of conscious agency. The analysis of Femina magazine s ideology of the modern Indonesian women is conducted by a further study toward the cover of the magazine the cover story and the editorial. Those three aspects are considered as the crystallization of the whole magazine content. The cover of magazine is the most important part for magazines since it is the first marketing agent of the magazine. The features of the magazine cover headline logo cover line and the model would be significant objects of analyzing the ideology provided by the magazine. In this case image reading analysis is being applied. Furthermore the analysis continues to a close reading analysis of what is written on the cover story and the magazine s editorial. Through its front cover Femina provides the first material existence of its ideology. The embodiment is fortified by further elaboration of the issue on the editorial and another elaboration on the cover story about the image of Femina woman in every edition. This particular representation however operates as the ideological state apparatus that interpellates women as the subject of the dominant ideology within the patriarchal society. This media representation reinforces the traditional construction of women as the submissive social subject.
