Nurul Muthmainnah M.A. Key Words Pictorial devices Motivation Listening Class Listening is commonly seen as a passive skill by most teachers. Due to this assumption Listening activity is always treated as it is assumed the students are involved passively in listening class. As a consequence the motivation of the students failed to emerge during the practice. Based on this insight the development of pictures is brought to class to encourage the students motivation during listening activity. The materials brought into listening class were mainly divided into two main items pictures and podcast program. In addition by presenting pictures in the listening class the students will gain sufficient authentic English exposure. This study employed collaborative action research design. The study involved seventh grade students of SMPK Cor Jesu Malang who were currently studying in the first semester. The study was carried out in two cycles where each cycle consisted of two meetings. In both cycles the assessment of students general performance was assessed in the second meeting to figure out how far they were motivated in the listening class. To collect the data required for the study the researcher used interview guide questionnaire field notes and observation sheet. The observation sheet was used to assess the teaching performance and students general performance in listening class. The report of the data which included the teaching performance and students motivation in listening class were analyzed qualitatively. The finding of the research indicated that the use of pictures in listening class was proven to be able to raise students motivation. From only one student out of twenty-nine students (3.45%) in category very motivated and six students (20.69%) in category motivated in listening class increased to 22 students (75.86%) where there were ten students (34.48%) in very motivated category and 12 students (41.38%) in motivated category. The improvement of the students motivation was indicated by the contribution they made in the classroom the activity they were dealing with and the self-confidence during the listening activity. Finally it can be indicated that the use of pictures in listening class has positive influences on students motivation. Some suggestions were also addressed to the teacher in term of the implementation of pictures in classroom and to other researchers in term of the further research in similar fields.
