There are three research problems in this study that are 1) what are the types of code switching used by Indonesian chatters in chatting language in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel 2) what are the possible reasons why Indonesian chatters switch their language when they chat in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel and 3) what are the factors that influence Indonesian chatters switch their language when they chat in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel Writing conversation in Yahoo Messenger is basically medium of verbal communication. It is open for linguistic analysis and the use of language switched from Bahasa Indonesia into English and the other way around is the most linguistic feature found in chatting conversation. In the preliminary observation the researcher found the phenomenon of code switching in chatting language. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative and the source of the data of this research is the chatting conversation in the form of writing written by Indonesian chatters in the Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel. The chatting conversation done by Indonesian chatters whose age between 17-25 years with various educational backgrounds. The data are taken from April 30 2009 until May 15 2009 The result shows that there are 5 five types of code switching which are used by Indonesian chatters when they chat in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel. They are 1) intra-sentential code switching (64 74%) 2) inter-sentential code switching (13 64%) 3) emblematic code switching (11 36%) 4) changing pronunciation (7 95%) and 5) continuing the previous speaker (2 27%). Intra sentential code switching happened in the form of a word within sentence (39 78%) noun phrase (9 09 %) verb phrase (3 40%) adjective phrase (1 13%) an independent clauses (4 54%) question (3 40%) and tag question (3 40%). There are eight out of ten possible reasons of code switching why Indonesian chatters switch their language when they chat in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel based on the theory. They are 1) talking about a particular topic (9 68%) 2) quote somebody else (3 22%) 3) being empathy about something (1 61%) 4) inserting sentence fillers of connectors (22 58%) 5) using repetition used for clarification (8 06%) 6) showing group identity (1 61%) 7) softening request and command (12 90%) and 8) being aware of real lexical need (12 90%). There is one reason that found in this research based on the previous research that is presenting term address (3 22%). Beside that there are three new factors found in this research that are 1) showing apology (12 90%) 2) showing greeting (12 90%) and 3) showing parting (4 84%). There are two other reason of code switching based on the theory did not occur in this study. They are intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and intention to exclude other people. There are five factors of code switching that influence Indonesian chatters switch their language when they chat in Yahoo Messenger (YM) chatting channel. They are 1) topic of the conversation (17 97%) 2) the participants (24 72%) 3) the setting 25 84%) 4) effectiveness of the message (22 84%) and 5) economic consideration (efficiency in time) (8 99%). From the result above it s obvious that the Indonesian chatters employ code switching in their conversation when they chat. It can be seen that they use various types of code switching the reasons of code switching and also the factor of code switching. In short we can conclude that the Indonesian chatters employed de switching when they chat. It can be seen that they use various types and reason of code switching which also influenced by some of factors of code switching.
