Abstract This study was focused on the problems in learning English faced by class 8C students of SMP Negeri 9 Malang including the students and the teacher s effort to solve those problems. This study used descriptive qualitative method and quantitative non-statistical method to compute the percentage of the finding. There were problems which appeared in four language skills. The problems were about the limited of vocabulary mastery problems in understanding the message problems in choosing vocabulary to use and lack of motivation. In overcoming their problems in learning English the students preferred asking question to the teacher friends or family rather than open their books or dictionaries. While the teacher applied CTL cooperative learning games and singing a song in the teaching and learning process to help the students in overcoming their problems.
