M.Pd Kata Kunci American BIPA students BIPA BIPA students writing development of ideas This study aimed to describe the development of ideas in Indonesian language paragraph by American BIPA students at Universitas Negeri Malang. Scientific information about developing ideas need to be discovered by Indonesian language teachers especially BIPA teachers as a reference on how to treat students in learning Indonesian language fit with students characteristics. In addition these scientific informations are also useful for the authors of BIPA text book and the other researchers. Considering these obvious benefits it is significant to do this research. This research is qualified as qualitative research with text analysis type. The data is paragraph in American BIPA students writing in UM. While the data sources of this research is the American BIPA students writing in UM in 2018 that is derived from the final project. The documentation technique is used in the data collection process. After the data is collected the data are analyzed through four stages namely (1) description (2) interpretation (3) explanation and (4) triangulation. Based on data analysis found idea development pattern and idea development strategy. The patterns are grouped into three classifications based on where the topic is located namely (1) deductive pattern (2) inductive pattern and (3) inerative pattern. The strategies are grouped into nine classifications namely (1) defining strategy (2) causal exposure strategy (3) classification strategy (4) description strategy (5) contrast strategy (6) sampling strategy (7) time ordering strategy (8) detailing strategy and (9) generalization strategy. Based on the results of the study the conclusions are put forward as follows. First the pattern of idea development in Indonesian language paragraph by American BIPA students at UM is classified into three patterns namely (1) deductive pattern (2) inductive pattern and (3) inerative pattern. Based on the frequency of use patterns that tend to be used more often are deductive patterns. This is because Americans have direct characteristics in expressing ideas. Second the strategy of idea development in Indonesian language paragraph by American BIPA students essay at UM is classified into nine strategies namely (1) defining strategy (2) causal exposure strategy (3) classification strategy (4) description strategy (5) contrast strategy (6) sampling strategy (7) time ordering strategy (8) detailing strategy and (9) generalization strategy. Based on the frequency of use the strategy that tends to be used more often is the sampling strategy. This is because Americans tend to use examples or illustrations to explain something. Based on the results four suggestions can be put forward. First BIPA instructors for students from America are advised to develop ideas with deductive patterns and sampling strategies especially in writing. These things make learning easier because it suits the characteristic of American students. Second the authors of BIPA textbooks or BIPA teaching materials for students from America are advised to develop writings with deductive patterns and sampling strategies in developing ideas. Third the results of this study can be used as an illustration to conduct further research on patterns and strategies for developing ideas of American BIPA students in more detail from the beginner intermediate and advanced levels. Fourth for science developers this research can be used as a reference to the development of theories about the development of main ideas in various aspects of patterns and various ideas development strategies written by American BIPA students. The results of this study can also be used as material for developing courses in the Development of BIPA Teaching Materials and BIPA Learning Strategies.
