Abstract

This study was intended to describe the teaching of reading in terms of techniques of teaching materials media and assessment in the bilingual class at MTsN Malang 1. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were the English teacher and the 24 Grade VII students of the bilingual class. The instruments used to collect the data were observation sheets interview guides questionnaires and documentations. Then the collected data were analyzed by using three phases i.e. data reduction data display and conclusion. The findings of this study were as follows. First the teacher applied three phases of reading techniques pre-reading whilst-reading and post-reading phase. In the pre-reading phase she told the purpose of reading activated the students background knowledge by doing pre-questions brainstorming and visual aids use and dealt with new and/or difficult vocabularies. In the whilst-reading phase she applied reading aloud silent reading reading in a group modeling and retelling. In the post-reading phase she asked the students post-questions gave feedback linked the text with the students experience and did writing activity. Second in terms of the material selection she took them from various sources textbooks magazines internet and the collection of legend and short stories. She taught descriptive procedure songs and academic texts to the students. In selecting the reading materials she considered several things namely readability suitability of content and exploitability. Third she used both traditional media such as pictures whiteboard and photographs and modern ones such as computers films internet and DVDs. In selecting the media she considered three criteria namely practicality student appropriateness and instructional appropriateness. Fourth she administered informal assessment such as feedback reading aloud peer-assessment text/story retelling and assignment. She also applied formal assessment in the forms of gap-filling tests matching techniques tests multiple-choice tests and short-answer tests. Based on the results of the study it is suggested that the English teacher should make lesson plans as their guidance in teaching and does not conduct the reading aloud too often. Besides she should pay more attention to the materials that have connection with real world/ happen in daily life and improve the way she administers the assessment especially informal or authentic assessment. For the principal and coordinators of the bilingual class program it is suggested that they may observe the class once in a while to make sure that the teacher and the students really use English every time and provide authentic sources of learning. For future researchers it is suggested that they may do research in terms of the use of English by the students in the bilingual class.
