Abstract

Manga is one of the most popular media in the recent days which has been produced and distributed worldwide. Usually wrongly referred as just comic Japanese manga proves its uniqueness and strength in depicting human s characters and behaviors thus successfully establishes its own popularity in the way that is different with European and/or American comics tradition. One of its well-known titles is an on-going Naruto series. The manga tells about a boy-ninja Naruto Uzumaki who lives and learns a secret ninjutsu in a hidden ninja village (called Konohagakure) to make his dream becoming a ninja-leader or Hokage come true. The focus of this study is to analyze economic motives behind characters behaviors in Naruto the Manga by studying its visual elements such as settings designs scenes dialogues gestures and other concepts in its narrative. Characters behaviors are further categorized into Heroic Reading Networking and Elimination Behavior. The collected information will then be interpreted using Maslowian hierarchy to reveal the underlying needs. Later Marx s perspective is used to capture the big picture wherein the characters and behaviors presented in Naruto are placed as economic subjects and activities. The result of this study proves that characters behaviors are deep-structuring the fulfillment of Maslowian five basic needs viz. physiological safety social esteem and self-actualization. In Naruto those needs are represented through mystified behaviors or characters actions such as the heroic saving of other characters kidnapping assassination team-work examination etc. Those needs are the manifestation of efforts by the ninja characters and their relative hidden villages as economic subjects to maintain their possession and control over assets to build network in order to gain greater economic power/access and/or to eliminate present and potential competitors in market s dispute. The analysis further reveals that the governing purpose underlying those needs is the calculative performance over nature - as the wild variable - to control secure and later increase the potential of future survival. The computation is aimed at finding out how far every and any kind of available natural resources can become beneficial to support characters survival. Such purpose is considered the most primitive motive of humankinds in a sense that as they struggle to maintain their existence they unconsciously conceive everything in their surrounding in terms of profit and loss calculation. This purpose also confirms Marx s famous dictum of homo economicus that postulates every single human hence society is actually driven and constructed by the basic desire of fulfilling their economic needs.
