Abstract

Education is one of the basic rights of human beings. All people normal and disabled ones have equal rights and chances to get proper education services. To promote education for all the concept of inclusion class will be an innovation in education system. An inclusion class consists of normal and disabled students who have very different learning needs as well as proficiency levels. To handle this condition the teacher should collaborate with other teachers. Collaborative teaching (co-teaching) approach is then implemented to cope with the diversity of the students in an inclusion class. Since it is a new approach the researcher wanted to know how co-teaching was implemented in an inclusion class. The study was conducted in SDN Sumbersari I Malang due to some considerations (1) its location is near the researcher s campus as well as dormitory so it helps the researcher to collect the data more easily (2) the number of the special students in each class is quite adequate for the study it is around 1 to 9 special students in each class. This study was intended to describe the implementation of co-teaching approach in the teaching of English in inclusion classes at SDN Sumbersari I Malang focusing on (1) the implementation of co-teaching models (2) the co-teachers responsibilities in the class activities (3) the techniques the materials and the media used to meet the students needs and (4) the students responses toward the co-teaching approach in an inclusion class. The design of this study is descriptive. The subjects of the study were the English and the special teachers and the first graders of SDN Sumbersari I Malang. The instruments of this study were observations checklist field notes interview guide and questionnaire. The findings showed that the English and the special teachers under study implemented co-teaching approach. It was implemented quite optimally since two aspects the co-teaching models and the shared-responsibilities in-class activity were optimally implemented. Even though two of the co-teachers responsibilities those were shared-responsibilities in the teaching preparation and in the co-teachers evaluation were not optimally implemented the teaching and learning process in that class could run quite well. Moreover the teaching of English done by the teacher was quite optimal since the techniques were effectively and optimally applied by the teacher. The weaknesses were the teacher did not make any syllabus and lesson plans as the framework of her class activities and she delivered the same materials and repeated them too often. From the observations the students once in a while were getting bored. Based on the findings some suggestions were given to make the betterment in the implementation of co-teaching approach in the teaching of English in inclusion classes. Those suggestions were (1) the English and the special teachers are suggested to improve the shared-responsibilities in the teaching preparation in-class activities and evaluation spend at least a little time together to design the syllabus as well as the lesson plans and then give meaningful feedback to one another in order to improve their quality (2) the English Department students should be able to use the strengths and weaknesses to develop strategies to make co-teaching approach effectively and optimally implemented to achieve the objectives of the teaching and learning process (3) other researchers are suggested to conduct further researches concerning the implementation of co-teaching in the teaching of English in inclusion classes in different schools with different focus of study.
