Abstract

The present study is a pragmatic study on nominal terms of address used by the characters in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice. The study is aimed to find out kinds of nominal terms of address used by the characters in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice and the patterns of occurrence context. The study analyzes nominal terms of address since they can indicate the social relationship between interlocutors after the loss of social deixis function of pronominal terms of address during the Early English period. It concerns nominal terms of address which occur in conversation only since it represents the natural flow of real life setting. The research employs content analysis and descriptive approach. The data are classified and analyzed using the classification of nominal terms of address developed by Laver (1981) MacArthur (1998) and Bubel (2006) in order to find out the kinds of nominal terms of address used by the characters and their underlying contexts. The results are then compared to previous studies done by Nevalainen and Raumolin-Brunberg (1995) Nevala (2003) Nevala (2004) and Khazanah (2007). The results show that there are 25 types of nominal terms of address used by the characters in Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice namely (1) Noble Title (2) Honorifics Title (3) Professional Title plus Last Name (4) Mr. plus Last Name (5) Mrs. plus Last Name (6) Miss plus Last Name (7) Kinship Title (8) First Name (9) Nickname (10) Terms of Endearment (11) Noble Title plus First Name (12) Miss plus First Name plus Last Name (13) Miss plus First Name (14) Miss plus Nickname (15) Miss plus Nickname plus Last Name (16) Terms of Endearment plus Honorifics Title (17) Terms of Endearment plus Mr. plus Last Name (18) Terms of Endearment plus Miss plus Last Name (19) Terms of Endearment plus Miss plus First Name (20) Terms of Endearment plus Miss plus Nickname (21) Terms of Endearment plus Kin Title (22) Terms of Endearment plus First Name (23) Terms of Endearment plus Nickname (24) Last Name alone and (25) Group Title. The first ten fit the amalgamated classification of Laver (1981) MacArthur (1998) and Bubel (2006) the next thirteen categories are combinations of the first ten and the last two are new categories. The employment of a particular address term is influenced by the social relationship between the interlocutors. The study also reveals that a particular character might be addressed by other characters using a multiple kinds of address terms. The selection among those types depends on the context underlying the use of the address terms. The predominant contexts which determine the selection of particular nominal terms of address over the others are the age gender and/or social status differences between the speaker and the addressee the size of imposition and the subject matter of the conversation. Based on the findings it can be seen that nominal terms of address is very sensitive towards social stratification. The older the age and the higher the social status differences the more impersonal address terms are used by the characters. Moreover the formality of the setting does not predominantly determine the choice. It might due to daily basis of family life setting. This research only investigated the use of nominal terms of address in Pride and Prejudice with a family daily life setting and occupies a broad scope and limitation on the use of nominal terms of address i.e. analyzing all nominal terms of address in the novel the researcher cannot go to an in-depth analysis. Therefore a more extensive study is needed to contribute more on the use of nominal terms of address in Pride and Prejudice. A study on the use of nominal terms of address within a novel from different genres and times might be an interesting field of research.
