Abstract

Despite their language and cultural background all people in the world love humor. In general they see it as a way to relax and forget their problems a little while. Experts have revealed a lot of benefits of humor for physiological emotional social and intelligent reasons. That is why people like to be around those who have good sense of humor. Humor itself generally consists of non-verbal and verbal humor. In verbal humor comedians twist one meaning of a word or sentence into another meaning. In other words they make use of twisting linguistic ambiguity. People might name some Indonesian comedians with great ability of twisting linguistic ambiguity. Still Ucup Kelik is considered the best in twisting linguistic ambiguity. His ability is amazing since not every person especially comedians can do twisting linguistic ambiguity as much and as quickly as he does. The purposes of this research are to find out the types of twisting linguistic ambiguity in Ucup Kelik s oral verbal humor the frequency of each existing type and the probable reasons determining the different frequencies. The research analyzes 80 utterances collected from three political-satire shows namely Caf Democrazy Democrazy and Republik Mimpi in which Ucup Kelik performs as Vice President Ucup Kelik. The data are collected through recording all of Ucup Kelik s utterances in the shows re-listening to decide which utterances that contain twisting linguistic ambiguity and transcribing them. Then the types of twisting linguistic ambiguity in terms of their structural levels the frequency of each type found and probable reasons behind the different frequencies are identified. The results of the analysis show that there are five types of twisting linguistic ambiguity in Ucup Kelik s oral verbal humor. They are twisting phonetic similarities twisting lexical ambiguity twisting pragmatic ambiguity twisting logic and miscellaneous. The former type occurs most frequently (36.25 %) since it involves the manipulations of the smallest linguistic units like junctures and letters. The second place is twisting lexical ambiguity which involves verbal manipulations in the lexical level (30 %). Then it is followed by the manipulations of contextual meaning or twisting pragmatic ambiguity (2.5 %). Two other findings twisting logic (15 %) and miscellaneous (16.25 %) are not directly included into the types since there are no elements of ambiguity. However since Ucup Kelik uses language as the medium of delivering such types they can be included within twisting linguistic ambiguity. Twisting logic contains the manipulations of logical thinking towards something unexpected while Miscellaneous mostly contains obscene jokes and the combination of non-verbal and verbal humor.
