ABSTRACT Soedarmawan Ahmad. 2008. Profile of a Good Senior High School English Teacher Based on Students Point 0f View in SMA N 1 Durenan. Thesis English Language Education Program Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Prof. Dr. H. Ali Saukah M.A. Ph.D. Key words profile good English teacher students point of view. A teacher has an important role in increasing students proficiency. He/ she is one of the important factors in education. Thus teacher must have several competences. Permendiknas Number 16/ 2007 obliged teacher to have four competences pedagogical competence personal competence social competence and professional competence. Accordingly this study was intended to investigate the profile of a good senior high school English teacher according to students point of view and whether or not the profile match with the criteria stated in the Permendiknas Number 16/ 2007 pedagogical competence personal competence social competence and professional competence. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design. The data were obtained from the English teacher the colleague the students and the headmaster. The main instrument in the study was the researcher. The results of interviews and observation from the research are analyzed and drawn into conclusions in line with the problems of the study. Based on the findings there were 18 profile of a good English teacher able to speak English fluently explains the grammar well uses humor in the class able to make the enjoyable teaching able to make the teaching learning process as student-centered able to deliver the main idea to the students explains clearly teaches using various techniques accustoms the students to speak in English understands the students characteristics gives score fairly uses the appropriate proportion of English Indonesia in explaining the lesson able to use the technology in teaching learning process such as laptop can correct students mistakes able to answer all of the students questions and understand students capacity and ability able to socialize with the students and know the teenager s world. The findings proved that the best English teacher has met the profile expected by the students and the standard of the Permendiknas Number 16/ 2007. In conclusion students expected their English teacher to have 3 competences pedagogical competence professional competence and social competence. However the students tend to choose pedagogical competence at most. Based on the research findings some suggestions were given to the headmaster English teacher and the next researchers. The Headmaster is suggested to provide various media to support teaching learning process such as providing the listening facility. For the English teachers they are suggested to keep improving their knowledge through self development. The last is for next researchers they are suggested to conduct research about teacher with other aspects such as profile of a good English teacher based on Junior High School students points of view.
