Abstract

ABSTRACT Widiyatmika Rofida. 2008. Using Credit Point System to Promote Students Motivation in Oral Participation in English Classes at SMP 1 Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Dr. Nur Mukminatien M. Pd. Key words credit point system motivation oral participation. Speaking as an oral language is one of the important English skills which is considered essential to be taught in this globalization era in which communication takes an important role in information world. Speaking is a productive skill therefore the students are required to produce samples of the language. However in reality the students hardly speak actively in their English classes they tend to be very quiet and be passive listeners. This may be caused by many psychological factors such as fear of making mistakes shyness and low motivation. It is also possible that it is caused by external factors such as the lack of speaking opportunity to practice English both inside and outside the classroom. Therefore teachers as facilitators and motivators should find ways to encourage their students to speak. One alternative of the ways is by using credit point system. It is a system where teachers give certain points to the students during the teaching and learning process in which the points are accumulated at the end of the study as a consideration of the final score. This study is intended to find out how credit point system can encourage the students to give oral participation actively in their English classes. Credit point system is one form of rewards. It has been found that reward which is a source of external motivators can increase intrinsic motivation. As an extrinsic motivator reward is still effective and applicable to be used in educational setting. This study uses classroom action research. The subjects of the study are 40 students of class VIII A in SMP 1 Malang and the English teacher who performs as the collaborator. It takes four meetings which are covered in two cycles. The data are taken from the observation and the informal interviews with the teacher and some students in random and analyzed descriptively. There are two criteria of success engaged in this study first 75% of the students participate in each meeting and second 100% of the students have taken the opportunity to speak at least once in the cycles during the study. Based on the result of the study it is found out that after being treated with the credit point system strategy the students are encouraged to speak in their English classes. They are actively involved in oral participation during the teaching and learning process. The result of the study shows the two criteria of success are well achieved which means that the credit point system has motivated them to participate. In conclusion the strategy of credit point system applied in this study has succeeded in solving the students problem in giving oral participation in their English classes. To increase their enthusiasm more it is suggested that the result of the points which have been collected and the students who obtains the highest points are announced to them. Allowing the students to know their total points and to know the top scorer of the points is directed to motivate them to participate more. However to keep away from the habit of motivating the students toward winning a prize or expecting something for what they have done the points should be given only in the initial stages of the program. Once the students have done the desired acts the points should be erased.
