Abstract

ABSTRACT Andriani Pipit. 2008. Some Consideration in Translating Technical Terminologies as Used in the Fields of Science and Technology and Economics. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Setyadi Setyapranata M.Pd Keywords translation technical terminology translated/Indonesian technical term adapted technical term adopted technical term The objective of this research is to know the State University of Malang students tendency in preferring technical terminology Indonesian adapted or adopted they use in communication and the factors which influence the tendency mentioned. From the factors found some reversal notions and recommendations are made for translators and the parties involved in responding to the tendency. To find out about the tendency researcher employs questionnaires in the form of a preference table. The number of the technical terms in the table is 25 for each Economics and Science fields and 10 more terms taken from each other. Each term is represented in three correspondents the adaptation Indonesian and English correspondents. The respondents are randomly-selected students from the faculty of economics faculty of mathematics and science and faculty of letters. The number of the respondents is 50 from each faculty. The data resulted from the questionnaires shows that most of the total respondents from the three faculties (60.11% means 90 people among 150 respondents) prefer adapted technical terms. The respondents from the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Mathematics and Science prefer Indonesian technical terms to the adopted ones while the respondents from the Faculty of Economics prefer adopted technical terms to the Indonesian correspondences. From this data it can be inferred that adopted technical terms are more popular than the Indonesian correspondences. Some factors which influence the tendency are (1) the attempt to show class identity (2) the impact of globalization (3) the sense of modernity and scientism (4) the sense of simplicity and effectiveness (5) the Sense of Cautiousness and (6) the Sense of Deficiency. From the factors mentioned some reversal notions and recommendations are made for Pusat Bahasa (Language Center) and translators in responding to the tendency of the society. Language Center is recommended to further disseminate the use of Indonesian terminologies by cooperating with governmental institutions and mass media. Translators are recommended to accommodate both sides of the society who favor the Indonesian terminologies and those who favor adapted or adopted correspondences. It can be done by putting the correspondences which are not preferred by the clients in brackets or footnotes to accompany the preferred technical terminologies.
