Abstract

ABSTRACT Abidasari Erlyna. 2008. The Implementation of English Conversation Club as an Extracurricular Program at SMP Negeri 4 Malang. Thesis Study Program of English Language Education Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. With the implementation of the 2006 School-based Curriculum schools are given freedom to construct and formulate the most proper aims lesson materials media as well as methods of teaching during the school years. For this purpose SMPN 4 Malang has its own program the so-called English Conversation Club (ECC) that aims to foster up students needs for speaking practice. It is designed to provide students with skill of using English communicatively to support the development of their productive skills. The program is settled down as an extracurricular which is conducted after school to give wider and more opportunities to practice and expose the target language without being restricted much by the time allocation. This ECC is assumed to be worth examining since its contributions will be useful for the school development. This study employed a descriptive design. The subjects were the VII and VIII grades students following the ECC program the English teachers and the headmaster of SMPN 4 Malang. The instruments in this study were field notes interview guides and questionnaires as well as any available document supporting the ECC program. The findings show the purpose of conducting the ECC to establish more opportunities to speak English in daily and natural contexts with comfortable environment. In addition it also implicitly prepared students to be ready to compete in speaking these purposes were supported by the use of facilities media and materials. The facilities provided by the school were considered sufficient which was reflected in the existence of language laboratory. Meanwhile most media were made by the teachers and the students so that they perfectly match the aims of the ECC activities. Further analysis on the materials showed the appropriateness of the materials due to the objective of the School-based curriculum that was to use English in simple daily life contexts. Concerning the learning processes conducted by the teachers in the ECC program the processes were classified as good ones since the learning processes generated relaxing yet responsible activities that focused on the development of self-esteem self-confidence as well as self- motivation to apply the target language. There were four observable sessions (1) 6 News reading (2) Who Wants to be a King/Queen (3) Tell and Transform (T T) and (4) Story telling competition. The next findings summarized the students and teachers opinions about the ECC whose results were both positive. The students considered the ECC as an important extracurricular program to be followed and later to be improved. Quite the same as the students opinions the teachers agreed that ECC should be conducted throughout the school years to help students achieve betterment in speaking English. However the implementation of the ECC was considered less maximum the ECC needed improvement. Based on the research findings some suggestions were given for the improvement of the ECC program. The ECC program implemented at SMPN 4 Malang should be supported by all school members and school programs. The school should hold some kinds of English competitions more often to arouse students motivations to use English. Regarding to the use of facilities media and materials the ECC instructors should improve their skills in operating digital equipments so that they experienced no difficulty during the presentation time. In addition to the media and materials use there should be more attractive and interactive media and materials which support the success of the learning processes. So far the instructors seemed to choose simple and traditional ones. In line with the improvement of the above aims more interesting fun and challenging activities should be conducted not only indoors but also outdoors. Finally the evaluation of the program had to be conducted regularly in order to have vivid pictures of the ECC development.
