Advisor Dra. Sri Widayati M. Ed. Key-words Learning Style Preference. The information about the diversity of students learning style preferences is essential for English language teaching and learning since it can be used either by teachers to develop an appropriate treatment or by the students themselves to know their strengths in mastering English as a second language. Due to the importance of knowing the students learning style preferences this study was conducted. This study aims to know the learning style of the first grade the second grade and the third grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Malang. The learning style preferences to be investigated are perceptual learning styles (auditory visual kinesthetic and tactile) and social learning style (group and individual). The design of this study is principally descriptive. Consequently the emphasis of this study is to describe the nature of the learning style preferences of students of SMP Negeri 4 Malang. Thus the variable in this study are the students learning style preferences and students grade. For practical reasons the sample of this study was drawn using stratified random sampling as a result VII- C VIII-E and IX-E classes were chosen as samples. The main instrument to collect the data is a questionnaire which is adopted from Joy M Reid s Perceptual Learning Style Questionnaire (1987). The data from questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively to find the means. Furthermore the writer also analyzed the overall means of all grades by doing analysis of variance (ANOVA) in SPSS program. Moreover to gain further information and to support the main data the data also derived from interviews with the students and the teachers which were analyzed qualitatively. This study reveals that the first and the second grade students chose kinesthetic as the most preferred of learning styles while the third grade students chose group. Besides the data revealed that the first and the second grade students have multiple major learning styles while the third grade students have a single major learning style. Furthermore an interesting trend was found that all of the three grades have the same preference in group learning as their major learning style. It reflects that SMP Negeri 4 Malang students like cooperate to with at least one other student or in group. From the results it is suggested that the teachers of first and second grade students should treat them with many kinds of activities involving their body movement like role play. Whereas for the teachers of third grade students the teachers should treat them with much of group work or group competition in learning English since most of them strongly like group learning. In addition varying activities in classroom is needed since every student has different learning style preferences.
