Abstract

Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is an approach to teaching in which the materials and activities are based on the students prior knowledge. It engages the students in significant activities that help them connect academic studies to their context in real-life situations. By making these connections the students see meaning in schoolwork. When the students formulate projects or identify interesting problems when they make choices and accept responsibility search out information and reach conclusion when they actively choose order organize touch plan investigate question and make decisions to reach objectives they connect academic content to the context of life s situation and in this way discover meaning. The discovery of meaning is the central characteristic of CTL (Johnson 2002 3-4). Considering that CTL provides context that is required of teaching it can be concluded that this approach is very important for both teachers and students. Through CTL the students will be able to find the meaning of academic content and retain it for a long time. Besides teaching using CTL approach offers more fun and significant enhancement in the students progress. In Indonesia CTL is the latest approach that is newly implemented. It has actually been promoted by educational experts since the competency-based curriculum was first implemented. However many teachers do not really understand this approach so the teaching and learning process cannot achieve the objective optimally (Komunikasi 2006 26). There are seven components that should be applied in the implementation of CTL. They are constructivism inquiry questioning learning community modeling reflection and authentic assessment. The implementation of CTL will be optimal if those seven components are applied well in the teaching and learning process. From the observation that the researcher made while doing her teaching practice it was only found some components appeared in the teaching and learning process. This tempted the researcher to know further the implementation of all components. On this ground the researcher thinks that it is necessary to conduct a research to get a true picture of the implementation of CTL approach in the teaching of English. In this study the researcher chooses SMPN 6 Malang as the object of research for four reasons (1) the teachers claim that they implement CTL approach (2) it has good reputation for it is considered as a national standard school where all activities are based on national standard (3) it will be promoted to be an international standard school and (4) it often wins story telling and debate competitions. Those four considerations were based on the interview with the teachers and the observation. This study was conducted to answer the research problem How is the implementation of CTL in the teaching of English at SMPN 6 Malang This general problem was elaborated as follows (1) How is the implementation of constructivism (2) How is the implementation of inquiry (3) How is the implementation of questioning (4) How is the implementation of learning community (5) How is the implementation of modeling (6) How is the implementation of reflection (7) How is the implementation of authentic assessment Based on those research problems therefore the main objective of this study was to get a true picture of the implementation of CTL in the teaching of English at SMPN 6 Malang specifically in terms of the implementation of seven components of CTL i.e. constructivism inquiry questioning learning community modeling reflection and authentic assessment.
