Abstract

School is a place for students to learn how to be able to produce good writings. Therefore it is the responsibility of teachers to develop students ability to identify some questions before they write. Those questions include What is the purpose of my writing Who is going to read my writing Why do I choose this topic and What kind of writing is this The result of the preliminary study revealed that the English teacher of SMP Negeri 1 Singosari conducted writing instruction by simply giving students certain topics to compose and asking them to submit without mentioning the purpose and intended audience of writing. This implies that the writing activity in the class is still less contextualized and does not suit the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Approach which emphasizes the relation between subject matter and real world situation. Contextualization in writing can be done by implementing audience/purpose-related strategies in writing. This study was then intended to achieve this purpose. The research problem was formulated as follows How can audience/purpose-related strategies be implemented to improve the quality of English writing of junior high school students This study was conducted by using action research with two cycles. Every cycle consisted of four stages planning an action implementation of action observing and analysis and reflection. The researcher at the same time acted as the English teacher in the class. The action research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Singosari which was located at Jl. Raya 1 Singosari in Class VIII G. The data in this study were the students writings. In Cycle 1 the researcher assigned the students to write two recount texts with the same topic to two different readers (brothers/sisters as familiar audience and the school headmaster as the other audience). In Cycle 2 the data were collected by assigning the students to write two announcements with the same message to two different readers (schoolmates/classmates as familiar audience and school teachers as the other audience). A functional text announcement was chosen because of its clarity on purpose and audience upon writing it. The study found that the students performed better in their writings when they wrote announcements (non-narrative texts). The students could adapt their writings based on the purpose and audience by using appropriate voice and register. In conclusion audience/purpose-related strategies could be implemented at SMP Negeri 1 Singosari class VIII G. Since the success of the action implementation was reached in cycle 2 the stages (planning the action and implementation of action) in the cycle become the answer of the research problem. Planning the action consisted of determining audience/purpose-related strategies designing lesson plan and making the indicator of success. In accordance with what had been planned the action implementation was conducted. The researcher conducted usual teaching and learning process based on the lesson plan namely pre-activity main activity and post activity. Before assigning the students to write their announcements the researcher explained purpose and audience in writing and asked the students to imagine the readers. Then the researcher went around the class to help some students having problems in writing. It is recommended that teachers mention purpose and audience in every writing activity and other researchers use more readers than just two kinds of reader familiar and other audience as it was in this study for every writing assignment so that various types of writing can be trained to students.
