Abstract

Archetype often appears in many forms of literature especially in the form of story. Archetype which appears in literature has its roots in mythology. That archetype is like a typecasting repeated again and again as characters in a story. It causes archetype is able to be used in both classic and contemporary. Since The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien is well known as one of the greatest mythological novel appreciated by the public for years until now which is not only full of mythology but also rich of signs it is absolutely chosen as the object of the analysis here. The Lord of the Rings is a literary product which contains myth fairy stories dreams and fantasy. It is about the conflict between good and evil where the protagonist has to endure a series of journey and obstacles to destroy his or her enemy. The scope and the aim of this study is on the analysis of archetypal and intertextual toward the journey which is endured by the main characters in The Lord of the Rings and the magical items used in this story. This analysis begins by examining the archetype patterns found in the three main journeys they are the journey of Frodo the journey of Aragorn and the journey of Gandalf. All of journeys have the same purpose for forcing the characters to overcome a series of obstacles so that they can transform themselves into more powerful wiser and greater for fulfilling their faith. As a novel based on myth fairy stories dreams and fantasy people may find so many magical items used which play important roles in the accomplishment of the characters to reach their goal. They are used not only by those who want to save the Middle-earth but also by their villains. Some of those artifacts clearly look as powerful as they have to be while some others seem so weak in the first time but in fact are important. Several of them become the basic weapons of their owners some work by their own power and can not be manageable by the stronger power outside while few are only kind of signs related to the status of the owners. Beside using archetypal study to analyze further analysis might be done since this novel can be examined through many other areas such as study about gender domination which might be using feminism study on the subject of Marxist idea found here and many more. Furthermore it is a kind of particular importance for the readers to pay attention to the constructor aspects behind this story. It will make them appreciate the reading that they read more since they already know that the story they read has some important aspects as sources.
