Prayogo M.Pd M.Ed (II) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Keywords code-switching English as a foreign language multilingual classroom interaction Code-switching is a common phenomenon among multilinguals. Code-switching is a language switch or the use of more than one code in an utterance or discourse. In addition to daily conversation code-switching is also common in foreign language classes. Therefore this research aims to investigate EFL lecturers code-switching in classroom interaction. This research focuses on the types (based on grammatical classification) and functions of code-switching employed by EFL lecturers of the Department of English Universitas Negeri Malang. The research design used in this research is descriptive qualitative because it aims to describe social phenomenon which occurs naturally. The researcher used observation and interview to obtain the data namely types (based on grammatical classification) and functions of code-switching employed by EFL lecturers of the Department of English Universitas Negeri Malang. The data were collected by recording lecturers utterances during learning and teaching process which then were transcribed and analyzed. The subjects involved in this research were three lecturers in the Department of English Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. The results show that there are four types of code-switching found namely (i) inter-sentential switching (34.8%) (ii) tag switching (32.6%) (iii) intra-sentential switching (25%) and mixed code-switching (7.6%). There are also sixteen functions of code-switching found namely (i) interjection (34.7%) (ii) socializing function (17.9%) (iii) repetitive function (10.8%) (iv) intention of clarifying speech content for interlocutors (10.8%) (v) checking students understanding (5.5%) (vi) giving emphasis (3.99%) (vii) quoting from somebody else (3.7%) (viii) giving introduction before a conclusion (3.2%) (ix) topic switch (1.8%) (x) personalization versus objectivization (1.8%) (xi) soften a request or command (1.6%) (xii) teacher admonition (1.01%) (xiii) motivating students (1.01%) (xiv) real lexical need (0.8%) (xv) unofficial interaction (0.8%) and (xvi) linguistic insecurity (0.5%). Based on the results it can be concluded that lecturers employed code-switching spontaneously because lecturers are multilinguals who are influenced by the languages they master especially their native language. In addition most of data show that lecturers used code-switching to make students get better understanding on the material. For future researchers it is suggested they use other classification of type and function of code-switching other setting community and media in order to enrich sociolinguistics study. For EFL lecturers it is suggested they consider the frequency of the use of code-switching in classroom interaction although they use it for the sake of students better understanding.
