Keywords modes of address sociological variable State University of Malang Language as a tool of communication is plays an important role in daily life of conversation. Language itself is built from many parts and modes of address are a part of it and. This present study focuses on modes of address used in daily communication among students of English Department of State University of Malang. The study was conducted in attempt to find and analyze the (1) kinds of modes of address found among students of the English Department State University of Malang (2) the most common kind of mode of address found among students and (3) reasonsof the use of modes of address found among students. The research signifiances are (1) to give some useful contributions to the study of pragmalinguistics especially the use modes of address among students of English Department State University of Malang (2) English Linguistics students is able explore more on the linguistics fields especially on pragmalinguistics field and (3) for future researcher this research is to be used as preference for conducting studies modes of addressing in different methods and fields of the research. This study is qualitative-descriptive in nature. The data were taken from 50 participants of undergraduate students at State University of Malang majoring in English Language and Literature with age range of 17-25 and chosen randomly. There were 13 kinds of modes of address out of 770 modes of address that were found these are Kamu Anda Mas Mbak Kakak Adik Nama Bapak Ibuk Bro Sis and Bang. There are two kinds of mode of address Distance Power Ranking (DPR) as independent variable and Distance Power Rangking (DPR) as dependent variable. DPR itself DPR as independent variables are divided into three categories 1) Social distance intimate and stranger 2) Power equal less and more power and 3) ranking small and high ranking. The findings show that in the case of intimate variable of social distance nama (name) was the most common modes of address being used as it aims at making relationship run more friendly. In terms of stranger variable Mas (older brother) and Mbak (older sister) were the most common a modes of address being used in formal situation as it aims at addressing stranger in polite way. Findings also show that equal power variable of Kamu (you) was the common way of addressing among friends in Indonesian. In terms of less power variable the most common modes of address are Kamu (you) as it aims at showing intimacy and Adik (younger brother or sister) as it aims at calling someone who was in younger age nicely. In terms of more power variable small ranking variable high ranking variable Mas (older brother) and Mbak (older sister) were the most common modes of address being used as it aims at showing intimacy to avoid Face Threatening Act (FTA).
