Abstract

Key Words Teaching of English International Standard Schools. The importance of English has motivated the Indonesian government to create better strategies in order to improve students ability in English. One of their strategies is initiating the international standard school as mentioned in the Education Bill no 20/2003 about National System of Education in article 50 verse 3 Indonesian government and or state government administers at least one (1) education unit at any grade to be improved as an education unit with international standard . The Research design in this study is descriptive qualitative. The design aims to describe the techniques applied the material selection and the media used by the teacher in teaching reading. The subject of this study was an English teacher of grade VII of Laboratory School State University of Malang. From the findings it could be concluded that the techniques that the teacher used in teaching reading comprehension here were pre-reading phase whilst reading phase and post-reading phase. Based on the results of the findings the teacher took the materials from some text books that had been provided in the school and other sources. To help the students in comprehending a text the teacher used both traditional and modern media. Based on the findings of this study there are several suggestions offered For the English teacher it is suggested that she should applies more various techniques of teaching so that the students will be more motivated to learn. Besides she should not conduct the reading aloud too often since it decreases the students attention to the teaching and learning process. In terms of material selection she should pay more attention to the materials that have connection with real world/ happen in daily life. In this case the teacher s teaching will be more meaningful in order to keep students interest in learning. For the principal and coordinators of the International class program it is suggested that they may observe the class once in a month to make sure that the teacher and the students really use English every time. Besides they may give more attention to the classroom of the grade VII itself since the shape of the class is too small. Finally for future researchers it is suggested that they may do research in terms of the use of English by the students in the grade VII since the use of English is not being observed deeply in this study.
