Abstract

Key Words English teaching Descriptive study Pictures Vocabulary TK Negeri Pembina Malang. This study was conducted to describe the teaching of English using pictures to introduce vocabulary at TK Negeri Pembina Malang. It aims at (1) describing kinds of pictures used by teacher at TK Negeri Pembina Malang (2) describing how the teacher at TK Negeri Pembina Malang selected the pictures to introduce vocabulary and (3) describing how the teacher at TK Negeri Pembina Malang used the pictures. This study is a descriptive qualitative. In the instrument used were field notes and interview guide. The data were collected through observation and interviews and analyzed descriptively. The findings show that the kinds of pictures used by the teacher include (1) Drawing on the board (2) Flashcards (3) Poster (4) Pictures on the book. The kinds of pictures above are used to introduce vocabulary to the students in the classroom. The teacher selected the pictures first before the teaching in the classroom began. The teacher got the picture from the internet the text book and she also made some of the pictures by herself. She sometimes also made drawings on the board. The teacher chose the pictures based on appropriacy with the lesson theme clarity of the pictures and the attractiveness of the pictures. The teacher used some techniques in teaching vocabulary in the classroom. In using flash cards the teacher first showed the picture cards to the students one by one. While mentioning the names of the pictures she asked the students to repeat what she had mentioned repeatedly. After that the teacher asked them to mention the names of things on the pictures she showed. In using posters the teacher first put the poster of animal or human on the blackboard. After that the teacher gave students explanation or introduces them to new vocabulary based on the poster. Then the teacher asked the students to repeat what she had mentioned. After that she asked two or more students to show the picture in the form of poster in front of the class while mentioning the names of pictures in the poster. The last in using pictures on the book the teacher gave the students explanation on the names of pictures on the book. The teacher asked the students to look at the pictures on their book. Then the teacher gave them clues for them to identify the names of pictures on their book. Sometimes the teacher asked the students to call the names of the pictures together but sometimes one by one. Based on the findings it is suggested that the teacher improve the use of pictures in vocabulary learning by making the activities more varied. It is also suggested that the teacher also use other kinds of media to support vocabulary learning. She can use real objects song and games. For future researchers it is suggested that they conduct research on the use of other kinds of media in the teaching of English at Kindergarten.
