Abstract

The State Univelsity of Malang English Department is known for the excellenceo f its programa nd for high level of English proficiency. The input of the State University of Malang English Department comes from various background of secondarye ducationa nd variousl evels ofEnglish proficiency. The goal ofthe State Unlersity of Malang English Departrnentis to provide the studentsw ith sufficient English proficiency knowledge ofEnglish the cultural background and literature of the Englishn ative speakers.T his institution is supposedto provide goodE nglish curriculum q ualified teacherst e xt books andm edia a nd also appropriatete chniques. Thereforet h e researchewr antst o know the students E nglish proficiencya t the beginninga nd after they study for almostt h reey earsa t the StateU niversity of Malang English Departrnent. This study is intended to (1) measure students English proficiency at beginning of their study at the State University of Malang English Deparhnent (2) measure studentsE nglish proficiency after they studyf or almostt hreey earsa t the State University of Malang English Department and (3) find out the progress of the studentsE nglish proficiency after studyingE nglish at the StateU niversity of Malang English Department both as indicated by the scores that they gain and as they perceive. The researchs ubjectsa re all the educationasl tudentso fthe StateU niversity of MalangE nglishD eparimentw ho were acceptedin l997 and are currentlyi n the 6o semesterT. herea re 27 subjectsf or the data ofthe TOEFL test and l l studentsa s a samplef or the daa of interview. The dataf rom the TOEFL test are analyzedb y using t-test for correlated samples. The data from the interview are analyzed and presented in a descripive way. The result of the TOEFL test shows that students English profiency after tlree years of study at the State University of Malang English Department is better than their English proficiency at the beginning of their study at the State University of Malang English Deparfinent. The computation using the t-test for correlated samples shows that the t-value is 16.45. It is much bigger than the critical t-value 2.056 which is neededin a non directionatle stf or the level of sigrificanceo f .05. So t he altemativeh ypothesisis accepted.W e can sayt hat there is a sigrrificantd ifference betweenth e English proficiency ofstudents at the beginningo ftheir studya nd after they study at the State University of Malang English Department for almost three years. The result of the interview showst hat45.45o/oo f the respondentsfe el that they havem ades omep rogressa nd 54.55%o f the respondentsfe el that they havem adea lot of progress The important factors that help them in making progress from the most important to the least are teacher s factor friends facilities their own effort to study televisiorq and English newspapers. The important factors that prevent them from makingp rogressa s they expecta re their lazinesst o improvet heir English and the lack of English supporting environment and facilities. Basedo n the resulto fdata analysisi t canb e concludedth att herei s a sigrificant diflerence between students English proficiency at the beginning of their study and after three years of study at the State University of Malang English Department.T he teacher sf actor is the most importantf actor in helping studentsto make progress.
