Abstract

Key words character building implementation The study is aimed to describe the implementation of character building in the teaching of English at State Islamic High School I Malang in the planning in the teaching process and in the assessment. The researcher referred to the list of character values according to Government Guidelines of Implementation of Character Building year 2011. The research applied descriptive qualitative research method. It was conducted at State Islamic High School I Malang (MAN Malang I). It is located at Jalan Baiduri Bulan 40 Tlogomas Malang. Two out of six English teachers were involved in this research as the subjects of the research. To collect the data this study used some instruments interview guide field note and questionnaires. The data were collected from April to May. Data in this qualitative research was analyzed by categorizing describing and synthesizing the collected data. It was found that in the planning of teaching there were only few character values appeared in the lesson plan. The lesson plans were developed with character development theories adopted from the Standard of Process in the Regulation of the Ministry of National Education. In the process of teaching there were many character values appeared other than what were planned in the lesson plans. It means the teacher implemented the character values implicitly. The teachers mostly emphasized on the values of courage and confidence. The teachers used some strategies in implementing character values in the process of teaching. First was by conducting fun activities and games to initiate students courage and confidence. Second was through interpersonal approach to each individual. In the assessment the character values implicitly appeared in the test items within the questions and the texts. The character values also appeared in the process of test. The teacher made assessing rubrics to monitor the development of character values of the students but not yet applied in the teaching process. Based on the results of the study it is suggested that the teachers should implement the character values in the more explicit way from the planning the process until the assessment of study. The teacher should assess students development of character building according to the assessment rubric which has already written in the planning of the study.
