Abstract

Keywords lexical cohesion abstract Lexical cohesion is a term for the cohesion that results from the co-occurrence of lexical items that are in some way associated with one another because they tend to co-occur in similar environment. This study focused on the use of lexical cohesion in thesis abstracts. Thesis abstract is chosen because it is an essential part of a thesis and can be a huge factor influencing reader s decision to read thesis and the reader s judgment about a thesis quality and importance. So it is important to write a cohesive abstract because typically lexical cohesion makes the most substantive contribution to the well-formedness of a text. This research was conducted to analyze the use of the lexical cohesion in thesis abstracts. The research design of this study is qualitative descriptive. The primary data is ten random chosen thesis abstracts specifically by undergraduate students majoring in Linguistics of the English Department in State University of Malang. This thesis focused only on the lexical cohesion namely repetition synonymy antonymy hyponymy hypernymy meronymy and holonymy. To analyze the data the researcher took the data which consist of seven categories of lexical cohesion that are used in abstracts and calculated the proportion of lexical cohesion in those abstracts. The results show that from the chosen ten abstracts all lexical cohesion s categories are found repetition (82.31%) synonymy (4.19%) antonymy (3.80%) hyponymy (6.42%) hypernymy (1.05%) meronymy (1.57%) and holonymy (0.65%).The type of lexical cohesion which occur the most in the chosen abstracts is repetition with the total occurrence is 82.31%. It is expected that texts from a factual genre in this case academic writings to exhibit a strong topic continuity and repetition has the strongest bond for a continuity in a writing. This finding is in accordance with Carthy (2002) and Miao (2002) s findings that repetition is a common phenomenon in English. From this research it can be concluded that all the categories of lexical cohesion are used although each abstract not necessarily have all categories in it. This study is focused on the use of lexical cohesion in thesis abstracts. Therefore other studies are still needed to improve the result and the finding about lexical cohesion in other genre.
