Abstract

Key Words writing achievement writing aspects descriptive texts ex-post facto design This study was conducted to find out whether there is a significant difference in the writing achievement between students of two different classes as well as in their achievement in each of the five aspects of writing i.e. organization content vocabulary grammar and mechanics. The samples of this study were the seventh grade of the Cambridge-Class students and the Regular-Class students of SMP Negeri 2 Tulungagung in the academic year of 2011/2012. The students writing in forms of 58 descriptive texts collected through the administration of a writing test was the main source of data in this study. They were scored by using analytic scoring for descriptive texts developed by Brown (2007). Two statistical analyses were used in describing the scores (1) descriptive statistics to find the Mean of the scores and (2) inferential statistics to find the significant differences of the Mean by applying t-test for two independent samples. The results of the t-test show there was significant difference in terms of overall achievement and of the five aspects in writing a descriptive text except for the aspect of grammar and mechanics between the Cambridge-Class students and the Regular-Class students. Even though the students scores are different quantitatively their achievement described by using the analytic scoring fell under the same criteria. (1) The Regular-Class students are able to provide a clear identification and description as the main parts of descriptive texts whereas the Cambridge-Class students have included an identification and description to some extent. Both the Regular and Cambridge-Class students were able to (2) develop ideas that are clear and detail (3) show variety in diction with some wrong diction (4) develop sentences that in general are complete and (5) use mechanics with only some errors that do not distract the readers. Considering the results of the study it is expected that English teachers still improve their students achievement in writing by collaborating with their colleagues to decide what should be taught in a particular grade. Before starting teaching writing teachers need to find out what students have learnt what they are able to do and in which areas of writing they still find difficulties. Therefore the teachers can build on what the students have learnt develop it and make improvements where necessary. In addition since the result of the study showed that the students of both Cambridge-Class students and Regular-Class students scored lowest for grammar of the text it is suggested that teachers give more emphasis in the teaching of tenses word order the use of article a/an/the the use of be and so forth used in descriptive texts since it is different between one type of text to another type. Future researchers who want to reduplicate this study are suggested to include broader samples. It is also suggested that they involve the eighth-grade students for a more comprehensive and wider generalization of the results of the study. 8195
