Abstract

Thesis English Language Teaching Program. Faculty of Letters. Sarjana Program. State University of Malang. Advisor Prof. Bambang Yudi Cahyono M.Pd M.A. Ph.D. Key Words writing skill videos as instructional media narrative texts This study was conducted to improve the ability in writing narrative texts of 11th Graders of Social Program 4 at SMA Negeri 7 Malang. Video was proposed to be applied in the teaching and writing because video is a powerful motivator is potentially effective in showing action or process helps to create a suitable atmosphere for the learning material and providing examples. Moreover some prior studies said that videos are influential media to make the students actively involved in the teaching and learning process. The researcher used collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) design. The subjects of the study were 11th Graders of Social Program 4 at SMA Negeri 7 Malang. The researcher involved a collaborator to assist her. The collaborator here was the English teacher at 11th grade of Social Program class. This classroom action research involved four phases in a cycle of research planning action observation and reflection. The implementation of this research also used the genre based approach which also focused on the process of writing. It consists of four teaching and learning stages Building Knowledge of the Field (BKoF) Modeling of the Text (MoT) Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT) and Individual Construction of the Text (ICoT). In BKoF stage the activities comprised asking questions and giving explanation. In MoT stage the students were given the model of narrative texts based on the video. Meanwhile in JCoT stage the activities were doing all the processes of writing narrative texts in groups. Finally students worked individually in writing the narrative texts in the ICoT stage. The result of the study showed that the use of videos could improve the ability in writing narrative texts of 11th Graders of Social Program 4 at SMA Negeri 7 Malang. It could be seen from the mean of students final score in Cycle 1 which was 79 while the mean of the students scores in Preliminary Study was only 68. Moreover the minimum passing grade determined by the school was 75 so that the mean of the students final score in Cycle 1 had passed the minimum passing grade. Furthermore there 76% of the students achieved the scores above the criteria of success. Because the minimum passing grade had been achieved the next cycle was not conducted. Additionally the students had positive attitudes toward the implementation of videos as instructional media in the teaching of narrative text. It was shown from all the students responses which were above the criteria of success which were above 70%. To conclude videos as instructional media could be applied to help the students generate the ideas create good plot of the story construct good organization use appropriate diction write with correct structure and use correct iii tenses in writing narrative texts. Videos also increased their motivation in learning English since videos made the teaching and learning atmosphere more joyful. Moreover the writing process within the genre based approach used in teaching writing narrative texts also improve the students scores. Moreover the students attitudes toward the implementation of this strategy were very good. Thus videos as instructional media could be implemented to improve the ability in writing narrative texts of 11th Graders of Social Program 4 at SMA Negeri 7 Malang. Based on the finding of the present study English teachers are suggested to use videos as instructional media. However the use of videos as instructional media to improve the students ability in writing narrative texts still needed to be explored further and expanded to other text types. Therefore future researchers are suggested to adjust the particular technique to different levels of education and different settings or condition.
