ABSTRACT Hasani Muhamad Nur. 2010. The Use of English Songs in the Teaching of Listening at SMA Negeri 6 Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs.H.Murdibjono M.A. Key Words English songs listening skill. This study is to find out and describe several matters in the implementation of English songs in listening activity at SMA Negeri 6 Malang. This study is developed as a descriptive qualitative research because some characteristics of qualitative were involved in this study i.e. the data setting were natural the findings were reported descriptively the researcher became the main instrument and the data were analyzed inductively. The subjects of this research were the students of grade XI at SMA Negeri 6 Malang. They were the students in grade XI-Science Program grade XI-Social Program and grade XI-Language Program. In this study some instruments to collect the data were also used i.e. observation sheet interview guide for the teacher interview guide for the students and questionnaire for the students. All the collected data were analyzed and reported descriptively. From the research findings it could be concluded that the students and the teacher faced some problems during the listening activity using English songs. For the students the problems occurred because the students lacked motivation lacked concentration lacked confidence and lacked vocabulary. While for the teacher the problems were divided into two categories the problems that were caused by the media and the problems that were caused by the students. To minimize the students problems the teacher used some strategies i.e. replaying the particular songs lyrics several times asking the students to concentrate giving some clues and multiple choices and even giving rewards and punishment for the students. Based on the result of this research there are many suggestions offered. For the English teachers it is suggested that the English teachers conduct the listening activity using English songs continuously and regularly in order to improve students listening ability. The teachers should also use new English popular songs which have relation with the topic in the textbook. In addition the teachers should give more control to the students in the activity in order to conduct the activity runs well. For the other researchers it is suggested that they conduct similar research in different levels of the students. Classroom action research (CAR) can be done as the alternative.
