Abstract

ABSTRACT Laily Nur. 2009. The Use of Rewards to Improve the English Achievement of the First Year Students of SMP Negeri 2 Grati Pasuruan. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Fachrurrazy M.A Ph.D. Key words rewards motivation achievement. The purpose of this study was to know whether the use of rewards can improve the students achievement in learning English. As we know learning a foreign language is learning to communicate in the target language. To be able to communicate in a foreign language there has to be a high motivation to learn it. Learning English as a foreign language can be very frustrating for the students if the teachers do not know how to make it enjoyable. Therefore it is very important for English teachers to motivate and encourage their students to learn English. This can be done by granting rewards for the attainment of some educational goals and their positive behavior during the teaching and learning process. This research aimed to find whether rewards could increase the students achievement in learning English. This study was a classroom action research. The subjects of the study were 34 students of class 7B at SMP Negeri 2 Grati Pasuruan. It was carried out in three cycles comprising six meetings. The data were collected by means of observation questionnaires interview and quizzes. There were two criteria of success used in this study 1) 75% of the students participate in each meeting and 2) all students quiz result can reach the passing grade of the English test (Standar Kelulusan Minimum) which is at least 65.00. The results of the study showed that in the first meeting after being treated with rewards in the form of food the students were motivated to get involved in the English class. However in the second meeting when the researcher offered the same reward the students participation in the class decreased because it turned out that they did not like edible rewards. When the rewards were substituted with scores the students were motivated to participate in the English class. They seemed to compete with other students in gaining the best score. As a result their test scores also increased. In short the use of rewards in this study successfully solved the problems of students low motivation in learning English. To increase their motivation the researcher gave the best three students the final rewards in the form of certificates. To prevent the students from developing the habit of learning English for rewards instead of for the need of learning it is suggested that the giving of rewards be stopped anytime the students have reached the desired behavior.
