Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing. It aims to describe (1) the activities done through scaffolding when the teacher teaches writing (2) the teachers and students responses towards the scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing and (3) the use of scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing. This study employed a descriptive design because it describes the implementation of scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing at SMK Negeri 3 Malang the teachers and the students responses toward scaffolding instruction as well as the use of scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing. The setting of the study was SMK Negeri 3 Malang and the subjects were two classes the tenth grade classes of Hotel and Restaurant 4 and Fashion 1. The instruments used to obtain the data were observation sheet for field notes interview guide and questionnaires. Syllabus lesson plans and students writings were included to complete the data obtained. Observation was applied in order to know the activities done in the classes. The result of researcher s observation was also supported by the teachers lesson plans and the school syllabus. Interviews were conducted to know the teachers responses towards scaffolding instruction and the teaching of writing. For the students questionnaires were provided for the sake of obtaining the students opinions. Moreover the students writings were also included in order to know the result of application of scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing. The results showed that in the teaching of writing in the two classes the tenth grade class of Hotel Restaurant 4 and Fashion 1 the teachers applied scaffolding instruction. These classes were in level D of scaffolding which meant the teacher gave verbal explanation and modeling to support the students in learning writing. Both the teachers and the students gave positive responses towards the application of scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing. The investigation done in the classes showed that the teachers and the students were able to accomplish the writing task well though writing was the most difficult skill to be taught. The students also found that there were no worries to write since the teachers gave guidance and motivated the students to write. Based on the findings English teachers are suggested to apply scaffolding instruction in the teaching of writing to help students to learn and improve their writing quality. The researcher recommends the following suggestions for the students of SMK. Since one of the scaffolding instruction s applications is guiding the students to write by such as giving examples to the students and giving verbal explanation the students should not worry to write. Besides the practicalii suggestions for further study were given. Other researchers or teachers could examine scaffolding instruction gradually by referring to the level of scaffolding instruction in classroom. Each of the five levels of scaffolding criteria is appropriate for certain students and could improve the students writing quality.
