ABSTRACT Muhrofin. 2008. The Teaching of English at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang. Thesis English Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Dra.Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. Keywords teaching English at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang The introduction of English in primary schools has taken place in the attempt to accelerate the improvement of human resources. Based on that phenomenon SDN Percobaan 1 Malang has started the teaching of English from the first class. This study is aimed at describing the teaching and learning process in the first grade of SDN Percobaan 1 Malang. SDN Percobaan 1 Malang is considered as a favorite school that must have good components. The purpose of this study is to describe the teaching of English in SDN Percobaan 1 Malang in terms of the teaching technique applied the availability of the English syllabus the instructional material and media chosen. The subject of this study are the English teacher and the students of the first grade. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative. The instruments used in this study are observation checklist field notes and interview. The result of this study was that the teaching of English at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang is good in terms of the teaching techniques applied by the English teacher to encourage the students to be active in the class. The English teacher of SDN Percobaan 1 Malang is a qualified teacher but the teacher had difficulty to manage the class in certain activities because of the big class. She presented materials with the various techniques. Her relationship with the students will good. The teacher did not always use the syllabus rigidly sometimes she changed or added the activities because what had been planned in the syllabus sometimes did not always run well in the classroom as stated in the syllabus. The teaching materials/ textbooks used by the first graders at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang were good since they contained various activities simple instructions various topics that suit to the students level interest and needs. In addition this textbook needs improvement in some aspects. Give colorful pictures in the textbooks and give a list of vocabulary. The media available at SDN Percobaan 1 Malang consists of 9 different kinds of media. Their conditions are good and can be used whenever the teacher needs them. Mostly the media provided by the school. The teacher did not use all the media because there are some media which are not appropriate to the goals the materials given the students interest and the students level of difficulty. Based on the research finding some suggestions were given for the betterment of the teaching and learning process of English in the first grade of SDN Percobaan 1 Malang. For the State University of Malang especially English Department considering the importance of the subject for teaching English for young learners the subject of English for Young Learner (EYL) which is offered to English Education students as an elective subject can be changed as the local content subject. The principal should provide more facilities of the teaching and learning English process by providing many kinds of supporting media. The teacher should pay attention to all students although it is difficult. She may learn more about how to manage the class. The writer suggests other researchers to continue this study by conducting a study not only in the first grader. Other researchers also can conduct a study on the certain technique of the teaching of English in this school.
