Abstract

Listening is a critical element in the competent language performance of second language learners whether they are communicating at school at work or in the community. Wolvin and Coakley (1991) cited in Duzer (1997 1) found that listening was perceived to be crucial for communication at work with regards to entry-level employment job success general career competence managerial competency and effectiveness of relationships between supervisors and subordinates. It is no doubt that listening comprehension is an essential skill that EFL learners should acquire as early as possible. As Dunkel (1986) cited in Wen-Shuenn (2005 149) pointed out that most researchers of listening comprehension agreed that listening comprehension should be the focal methodology in foreign/second language instruction particularly at the initial stages of language study . Some SLA theorists (e.g. Krashen) have also stressed the role of listening in facilitating second language acquisition. Krashen (1981) stated that listening comprehension provides the right conditions for language acquisition and development of other language skills. Based on the regulation of the Minister of Education (no. 22 of 2006) the current curriculum is called Standard of Content (Standar Isi) where English is taught in elementary (SD) junior (SMP) and senior high school (SMA). The goals of teaching English are as a means of communication to access the information in daily life as a means to build interpersonal relationship and to exchange the information. According to the regulation of the Minister of Education (no. 22 of 2006) it is stated that the teaching of English integrates the four skills which include listening speaking reading and writing. It is also stated that listening gets equal attention to other language skills. Teaching and learning listening are not easy because teachers and students face many problems. There are six problems that students have (Ur 1996 111-112) problem with the sounds problem to understand every word problem to understand fast natural native speech the need to hear things more than once problem to keep up and problem of getting tired. Talking about media in teaching and learning listening it is hard to find the suitable media for SMA students. Although there were a lot of multimedia materials available in the market many of them were for children and the content was not based on curriculum. To solve this problem the researcher tried to make multimedia material suitable for the SMA students and teachers need. Multimedia applications for foreign language learning can provide a more realistic picture of the new language and culture in the classroom including not only linguistic but also paralinguistic features such as body language gestures prosody etc. which help to convey meaning to the learners (Brett 1995). Because it is hard for the students to practice listening by the limited material inside and outside the classroom it is necessary to develop listening courseware for them. Listening courseware contains graphic audio and video which can be more attractive for the students to learn English more easily. Thus the objective of the study is to develop listening courseware for the first grade of SMA which is for classroom used by the teachers. This study adopts the framework of instructional design developed by Taba (1962 12) cited in Dubin and Olshtain (1986 2) and framework of material development by Hall (1994) cited in Tomlinson and Masuhara (2004 19). The material development consists of seven steps. They are (1) listing theories of language learning (2) conducting need analysis (3) selecting potential materials (4) materials development (5) materials evaluation (6) revision and (7) the final product.
