ABSTRACT Utami Wahyu Kurnia. 2008. Applying Show Not Tell Technique to Improve the Ability of 8th Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Lumajang in Writing Descriptive Paragraphs. Thesis Malang English Language Department Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisor Drs. Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key words Descriptive Paragraph Show Not Tell Process of Writing Classroom Action Research The study revealed that the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Lumajang had difficulty in developing the given topic sentence clearly and vividly. Therefore the research problem which is addressed in this study is How can Show Not Tell technique be applied to improve the ability of the 8th grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Lumajang in writing descriptive paragraphs . The research methodology used in this study was classroom action research conducted in two cycles. In the first cycle the activity was done in collaborative group works. Since the result of the implementation of the action in Cycle 1 had not met the criteria of success yet the researcher continued to Cycle 2 by revising the activity in previous lesson plan. Unlike the activity in Cycle 1 the activity was done individually from the beginning of the writing activity. After the implementation of the action the students writing ability improved in terms of content and organization. It could be seen from the increase of the students writing scores in terms of content and organization in preliminary study Cycle 1 and Cycle 2. From the students writing products it could be concluded that they could developed the telling sentence given clearly and vividly. The result of the implementation of the action revealed that the technique of Show Not Tell can be an alternative solution in helping the students to compose a clear and vivid descriptive paragraph. Since the technique of Show Not Tell involves the students to write through the process of writing and also gives the students chance to choose their own telling sentences to be described. It is recommended for high school English teachers to develop the technique to be more enjoyable and easier for the students. Further researchers are recommended to conduct a further research concerning the application of the technique of Show Not Tell. They are also recommended to conduct other researches on the use of the technique of Show Not Tell in teaching different kind of texts such as comparison and contrast poem etc.
