Abstract

ABSTRACT THE EVALUATION OF THE READING COMPREHENSION FORMATIVE TEST OF THE ELEVENTH GRADERS IN MAN 3 MALANG Ashari Achmad Hasan. 2008. In a teaching process a test is generally needed by teachers and test administrators as a feedback from the teaching process to decide the aspects which are difficult to the student individually or in groups by analyzing the students mistakes and how much the objectives have been achieved. The purpose of this study is directly investigating the validity and reliability of the scores obtained by the reading comprehension formative test of the eleventh graders in MAN 3 Malang. Besides items analysis is needed in this study to decide the level of difficulty. The result of the study gives a great value for the society especially for the test administrators or English teachers as the test makers. It means that the result of this study is used as a consideration in designing a good test because it gives an accurate information for the teachers or the test administrators in measuring the students ability. The study evaluates the scores obtained by the test instrument to get the information about the validity evidence and reliability estimation also the difficulty level of the items in the reading comprehension formative test of the eleventh graders in MAN 3 Malang by using the descriptive-quantitative method. The researcher interprets the data in two ways. The first the researcher describes the content validity evidence of the test instrument based on the curriculum. The second the researcher estimates the reliability by interpreting the scores obtained by the test instrument using a formula developed by Kuder and Richardson-21 (Tinambuan 1988 22)and level of difficulty (Heaton 1998 178) The result of the study shows that the evaluation of the reading comprehension formative test of the eleventh graders in MAN 3 Malang approximately has the criteria of a good test. The content validity evidence of the test items goes in line with the curriculum for SMA / MA that it can be said the test instrument provides a strong evidence as good content validity. The reliability estimation shows that the interval between the two correlation is too wide they are 0.56 and 3.1 which means that the researcher does not find enough evidence to say that the scores obtained by the test instrument have high level of reliability. The level of difficulty estimation shows that the items in the test instrument are averagely easy since the index falls between 0.75 to 1.00. Based on the implication of the method used in the study and its result it is concluded that the instrument need to be improved to get the criteria of a good test. i ii
