Abstract

Consideringth e importanceo f a textbooki n teachinga ndl eamrngp rocess publishers and writers compete to publish new English textbooks when the new curriculumi s releasedfo rjunior ands eniorh igh schools tudentsA. s a result t herea re manyE nglish textbooksa vailable in the market that are consideredr elevant t hough not all to tle cunent curriculum. Therefore i t is not easyf or the teachersto choose which textbooksa re appropriatef or the students.T hus this study is conducted. This studye ndeavoursto find out the answersh ow much the English textbook for the secondy earo fsenior high schools tudentsp ublishedb y Depurtemert Pendidikand an Kebudaycta(rl ) meetst he requirementisn termso f curriculum relevance( 2 ) meetst he generagl oalsa sd eterminedin the 1994E nglishB asic CourseO utlinei n termso f the presentationo f the exercisesa nd( 3) meetst he requirementso f a good textbook in terms of the treatmento f the exercisesin the textbook. It employs valufion study due to the fact that this study concerns the evaluationo fthe qualiryo fa textbook.T he evaluationis basedo n the threec riteria i e. ( 1) the contento fthe textbooks houldb e relevant o the 1994E nglishB asic CourseO utline ( 2) th presentationo f the exercisesin the textbooks houldm eett he generagl oalsa sd eterminedin the 1994E nglishB asicC ourseO utline ( 3) the textbook should meet the requirements of a good textbook in terms of the treatment ofthe exercisesT. he first andt he secondc ategoriesa ree valuatedb asedo n the 1994 English Basic Course Outline and the third one is waluated by using the principles proposedb y Nunan. From the evaluation of the findings three main conclusions are drawn as follows.F irst it is concludedth at the textbook English for the SeniorH igh School Book 2 for the Second Year publishedby Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan bas 74.A7% of the curriculum relevance and it is considered good. In addition to this in terms of the presentationo f tle exercisesin the textbook the textbookc ompletely meets the genersl goals in the 1994 English Cuniculum. Since the textbook can cover 100%o fthe generagl oals i t is saide xcellentF. inally t he textbook Englishf or the SeniorH igh School B ook 2 for the SecondY eat is consideredp oor in terms of the treatmento f the exercisess ince it only covers5 0o/oo f the requirements.
