i ABSTRACT Bimantara Bagus Nova. 2018. Test-Takers Strategy in Toefl Preparation Program Provided by The Management of Language Center Institutions. Thesis Department of English Faculty of Letters State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dr. Sintha Tresnadewi M.Pd. (II) Prof. Dr. Gunadi H. Sulistyo M.A. Keywords Washback Test-Takers Strategies TOEFL Preparation Program As English gains a major position in education and commerce the demand on TOEFL is also arising. The condition turns TOEFL into a high-stakes test. In response to the phenomenon educational institutions offering a specific program focusing on the preparation for taking the test where the program implements certain strategies known as Test-Taking Strategies. This study was qualitative study that aimed at describing the implementation of Test-Taking Strategies in TOEFL Preparation Program as natural as possible without any manipulation on the situations of the study materials and other aspects related to TOEFL Preparation Programs. The study was carried out in two language center institutions in Malang. The data of the study were taken through observations to the class activities and interviews with the management and tutors of the institutions. The data were analyzed in accordance to the type to answer the questions in the beliefs held by the institutions the type of Test-Taking Strategies implemented in the program and the extent of the implementation. The validity of the analysis result was ensured by data triangulations to avoid biases. The results of the research found 1) the institutions believe that Test-Taking Strategies is suitable to help the learning process in TOEFL Preparation Program. 2) from the two major classifications of Test-Taking Strategies not all of the aspects appear during the observation. For Test Preparation Strategies the appearing strategies were Cognitive and Meta-cognitive aspects and for Test-Taking Strategies Item Analysis and Distracter Selection aspects were constantly used while Time Management and After Test aspects have different implementation in the observed institutions. 3) the discussion on Test Taking Strategies in the classes was limited only to introduce or to help the explanation on the lesson. The institutions didn t suggest students to rely on strategies during the test. Students must improve their skills on the purpose to improve the score. At the end there two recommendations from this research. 1) For the management and academic staff of language center institution it is suggested to apply and introduce more strategies in the discussion with students. 2) For further researcher it is suggested to do similar research in a broader scope of study involving more institutions test-takers point of view and different type of test preparation programs. Therefore more test-taker s strategies might be discovered and identified in these kinds of programs. In addition the development of the instruments for data collection is still open for further improvement and modification.
