Abstract

Keywords peer assessment writing ability hortatory exposition text The underlying problems in this study were the students writing ability in XI MIPA 6 of SMA Negeri 9 Malang was under the desired criterion. In the preliminary study there were only 8 or 28.57% students who got score above 78 as the standard minimum score. The researcher found that the students had difficulty in grammar. The students were inconsistent using the appropriate verb for singular and plural subjects in simple present tense. The use of word forms like capitalization and punctuation also became problems for them in writing. Therefore the researcher intended to use peer assessment as the strategy to improve the students ability in writing hortatory exposition in XI MIPA 6 at SMA Negeri 9 Malang. By implementing this strategy the researcher expected to help the students improve their ability in writing hortatory exposition text. The research design used in this study was a classroom action research which aimed at improving the students ability in writing hortatory exposition text. This study was conducted in one cycle. There were some steps in conducting this study including planning acting observing and reflecting. Questionnaires before and after the implementation of the strategy interview guides writing prompts observation checklists and field notes were used by the researcher during the study to collect the data. The subjects of this study were students of XI MIPA 6 at SMA Negeri 9 Malang. To analyze the data the researcher used scoring rubric to score the students final writing task. Based on the analyzed data it was found that the students writing of hortatory exposition text improved covered all aspects (content organization grammar vocabulary and mechanics). In the preliminary study the students average writing score was 70.66 after the implementation of the strategy the students average writing score was 85.59. There was an increase as many as 14.93 points. There were 89.28% of the students who got score above 78. It can be concluded that the implementation of peer assessment strategy could successfully improve the students writing ability of hortatory exposition text in XI MIPA 6 SMA Negeri 9 Malang. Based on the conclusion the researcher would like to give suggestions for the English teachers to use peer assessment strategy to help the students solve their problems in writing. For future researchers who were interested in conducting similar study to use different topics and other peer assessment instruments such as guided questions or rating scale to know how far the strategy can improve the students writing ability. The future researchers were also suggested to give the students more than one writing prompt during the implementation of the strategy.
